Afghan International Market — trading in English as both Afghan International Market and Afghan Market, and in Dari on its own signage and Facebook posts as افغان مارکیت — is an Afghan grocery and hot kitchen at 4422 Saint John Ave in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast, run by Jawed and Tariq.12 It began as imported Afghan snacks and dry goods with convenience-store staples, with hot Afghan dishes stated as a plan; that kitchen now exists, sending out Kabuli pulao, lamb and chicken kabab, mantu, and karahi.23 It is the only Afghan grocery identified in the metro this pass. Tier 1 — owner-operated, resident-owned, single location.

Name note: RefugeKC and Yelp file it as Afghan Market; the business’s own Facebook post heads itself افغان مارکیت / Afghan Market while the page name and delivery-platform storefront read Afghan International Market. All refer to 4422 Saint John Ave. Both English forms are recorded as aliases rather than one being declared correct.

Description

Two businesses share one room. The grocery side is the imported Afghan pantry — snacks and dry goods brought in for a community that arrived in Kansas City largely after 2021, plus the convenience-store staples that keep a corner store on St. John Ave viable day to day.2 The kitchen side, described by RefugeKC as a plan and since realized, cooks Afghan food to order and to carry out.23

The pairing is characteristic of first-wave immigrant food retail: the store comes first because the community needs ingredients it cannot buy elsewhere, and the kitchen follows once there is enough foot traffic to support it. Kansas City’s Afghan arrivals are recent enough that this is, so far as this pass could establish, the metro’s only dedicated Afghan grocery — a single point of failure for an entire cuisine’s supply.

Its block places it in the metro’s densest corridor of immigrant food retail. St. John and Independence Avenues within a mile or two hold baraka-market, al-rahaman-mediterranean-market, hilaal-halal-market and mogodishu-market; this is the Afghan entry in that row.

Ownership and history

RefugeKC — the Kansas City refugee-community guide — names the owners as Jawed and Tariq and describes the business as selling imported Afghan snacks and dry goods alongside convenience items, with hot Afghan dishes planned.2 Surnames are not published and are not invented here — “.

No founding date is documented. The Facebook page identifier resolves to a 2022-era account and community comments on the market’s own post read as congratulations to a new venture, but a page-creation date is not a founding date and is not cited as one.1 A Missouri Secretary of State entity search or a Jackson County business-license record would settle it.

menu_status: partial — the kitchen’s items are recorded below from the delivery-platform storefront, but no prices are published here. The only priced listing found is the delivery platform’s, and platform prices routinely run well above in-store prices; the Registry does not carry them. Prices are “ until a first-party board photograph, printed menu or own-site menu is obtained.3

Kabuli pulao (also transliterated Qabuli palaw) is the Afghan national dish — rice steamed with lamb, carrot and raisin. Mantu are the steamed lamb dumplings served under yogurt and often a split-pea or lentil sauce. Burgers, pizza and packaged drinks also appear on the platform listing, which is the ordinary hybrid of a corner store with a grill.3

Transliterations here follow the platform listing’s spellings where it gives them; where a dish is discussed in prose the common Dari romanization is used and the alternate is noted rather than silently corrected. A first-party menu photograph would upgrade this section to verified and confirm in-store prices.
