Albers Medical Pharmacy is an independent, family-owned pharmacy founded in 1976 in the Broadway Medical Building just north of the Country Club Plaza, opened to serve the building’s medical specialists and the surrounding neighborhood. It runs two metro locations — 4400 Broadway in Kansas City and a drive-thru store in Grandview — and has compounded custom prescriptions since the 1970s, specializing in dermatological preparations and hormone replacement therapy. It has served as a rotation site for University of Missouri–Kansas City pharmacy students since 1977.

Description

Albers Medical Pharmacy is an independent Kansas City pharmacy operating two metro stores. The original is at 4400 Broadway, Suite 106, inside the Broadway Medical Building at the north edge of the Country Club Plaza; a second store with a drive-thru window and long-term-care packaging operates at 7201 East 147th Street in Grandview.1 The business describes itself on its own site as “a local family owned pharmacy” providing personal care since 1976.2

Its distinguishing service is compounding. Albers states it has compounded customized prescriptions since its founding in the 1970s, buys bulk chemicals from certified and licensed suppliers, and specializes in dermatological preparations (creams, ointments, gels) and hormone replacement therapy (capsules, troches, suppositories). Turnaround for many compounds is under twenty-four hours. Albers explicitly does not compound sterile products — no injectables, no ophthalmics.3

The second distinguishing line is vaccination. Before 1998, according to the pharmacy’s own history, area physicians’ offices were running short of flu vaccine and patients had few alternatives; Albers had a pharmacist certified by the state of Missouri to administer vaccinations, established a collaboration with a local physician, and has since required every pharmacist on staff to complete a vaccination certification program. That program grew into a travel clinic administering overseas-travel and college-entry vaccines without a doctor’s visit.4

History

Albers Medical Pharmacy opened in 1976 as a full-service retail pharmacy positioned to serve both the growing Country Club Plaza area and the patients of the medical specialists whose practices occupied the floors above the store — a physician-building pharmacy model.4 In 1977 it was asked to serve as a rotation practice site for pharmacy students from the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Pharmacy, a role the pharmacy still cites.4

Compounding has been part of the practice since the 1970s.3 The vaccination program dates to the late 1990s and grew out of a local vaccine shortage; it later expanded into a travel clinic.4

A separate Kansas City firm of similar name. Albers Medical Distributors, Inc. — a Kansas City secondary-wholesale pharmaceutical distributor, a different kind of business from a retail pharmacy — was prosecuted in the Western District of Missouri for selling counterfeit and misbranded drugs. Its owner, Douglas C. Albers, then 55 and of Leawood, Kansas, pleaded guilty on October 18, 2006, agreed to a $500,000 civil forfeiture, and agreed to surrender his pharmacy licenses in Missouri and Kansas; the matter included an FDA-urged recall of more than 18 million Lipitor tablets.5 No source located in this pass establishes any corporate or ownership relationship between Albers Medical Distributors, Inc. and Albers Medical Pharmacy, and the two are distinct entities on the face of the record. The similarity of name — and the fact that the pharmacy’s Grandview contact address is doug@albersrx.com1 — is noted here so that a future editor does not have to rediscover it, not as an assertion of any link.
