Anthony’s Restaurant & Lounge is a three-generation Italian family restaurant at 701 Grand Blvd in Downtown Kansas City — open since 1978, with the family’s KC roots going back to the 1960s. Now run by Anthony III and Vito Spino, the grandchildren of the original KC restaurant family. Fresh-ricotta lasagna, house Italian dressing, cannoli, Sunday fried chicken.
Description
Anthony’s Restaurant & Lounge is one of Downtown Kansas City’s longest-running survivors — a three-generation Italian family operation at 701 Grand Boulevard that has outlasted dozens of neighboring concepts across nearly five decades. The building itself has housed the Spino family’s restaurant businesses since the 1960s, when Anthony Jr.’s mother ran The Soup House, a 13-stool café serving daily lunch. Anthony “Butch” Spino Jr. and his wife Teresa expanded the space into a full-service Italian restaurant in 1978, when friends told him he was crazy for trying. He proved them wrong. Today the third generation runs the kitchen and dining room — Vito Spino and Anthony Spino III, the grandchildren who inherited both the space and the recipes. Lasagna is made with fresh ricotta and a signature family tomato sauce; the house Italian dressing is a fixture; cannoli close the meal. Sunday lunch is an all-day affair and the day the kitchen adds Southern fried chicken to the Italian lineup. Tock reservations available.
Tier classification
Tier 1 provisional — KC Italian family with roots since the 1960s. Anthony III and Vito Spino are the third generation of a family whose Kansas City restaurant roots go back to their grandmother’s Soup House in the 1960s at the same 701 Grand location.1 Their father Anthony Jr. opened Anthony’s in 1978. Third-generation operators of a 60+ year KC family business are almost certainly KC-born/raised. “ — no press source explicitly confirms Anthony III or Vito were born in the KC metro.
