Barbacoa de Pecoso is a Kansas City, Kansas food truck and market vendor selling barbacoa, carnitas, al pastor, chicken fajita and vegetable tacos on hand-made corn tortillas, plus quecas and its own “IgNachios.” It is associated with La Placita, the Central Avenue Betterment Association’s free-booth Saturday market — a market programme, not a building. Its own website barbacoadepecoso.com carried a full menu through at least January 2024 but no longer resolves in DNS; the operation is now effectively social-only. Current operating status is NOT first-party confirmed — see Current standing. Tier 1 — single owner-operated Wyandotte County independent. Owner: ****.123

Description

Barbacoa de Pecoso is a barbacoa specialist working the mobile and market end of the Kansas City, Kansas Mexican food economy rather than a storefront. Its own website described a single technique applied across a short menu: meat or vegetables “traditionally cooked… in the style of Pecoso,” served on hand-made corn tortillas described as “a little bigger than street tacos,” and finished with cilantro, onion, cucumber, and diced habanero on request. The cucumber garnish is the signature — it is not standard on the Central Avenue taquerias the Registry already carries.

The site organised that technique into three formats: the Taco ($4), the Queca ($10) — a large hand-made tortilla folded over melted mozzarella — and IgNachios ($12), a corn-chip bed under nacho cheese finished with what the site called “a Mexican salsa flag.” Each format was offered across five proteins/fillings. The tagline on the front page was “Nuestros tacos no engordan!”

Relationship to La Placita — and why it is not 1031 Central Ave

Barbacoa de Pecoso is publicly associated with La Placita. It is worth being precise about what La Placita is, because the name invites the wrong inference:

La Placita is a programme, not a building. It is a free-booth Saturday market run by the Central Avenue Betterment Association (CABA), whose own office is at 1303 Central Ave, in partnership with the Unified Government’s Parks and Recreation Department. CABA charges vendors nothing for space so that vendors keep all profits; the market functions as a grassroots business incubator letting residents test a food concept before committing to a storefront or a truck.24 Its programme manager, Susana Rodriguez, framed it to KSHB as “a great way to show what are talents and our ideas and our creativity that we have as Hispanics.”4

Its location has moved. Directory and earlier-era references place it at Bethany Park, 1120 Central Avenue;45 CABA’s own current page advertises the 2026 season at the Rock Island Bridge, every Saturday 08:00–13:00 from May through September, with dated Saturdays listed through 12 September 2026.2

It is therefore unrelated to 1031 Central Ave. el-pirata-kck occupies 1031 Central Ave; La Placita has never been recorded at that address, and Barbacoa de Pecoso is a separate business from El Pirata in every respect — different operator record, different format (mobile/market vendor versus fixed mariscos dining room), different cuisine. Any “Barbacoa de Pecoso at 1031 Central Ave” claim should be treated as an address error. No source located places Pecoso at 1031, and the Flavors of Central corridor tour — which lists 1031 as El Pirata — does not list Pecoso at all in its 2022, 2024 or 2025 editions.6

Ownership and history

Not established. No owner name, family history, founding year or press profile was located. The business communicates through a Gmail address and social accounts; “Pecoso” is a Spanish nickname meaning “freckled” and almost certainly refers to a person, but no source names them.

The Internet Archive’s index gives a rough activity window for the web presence: captures of barbacoadepecoso.com returning HTTP 200 in February 2023, December 2023 and January 2024, then HTTP 302 redirects in February 2025 and July 2025, and no resolution at all today.78 That establishes the site existed by early 2023; it does not establish when the business started, and a lapsed domain is a common and unremarkable event for a food truck.

**** A Kansas Secretary of State entity search and a Wyandotte County mobile-food-unit licence check are the obvious next moves and have not been run.

Independence: no chain, franchise or out-of-metro parent identified.

Last verified: 2026-08-13 · Source: the business’s own website, barbacoadepecoso.com, as captured by the Internet Archive on 27 January 20241 · menu_status: partial · Confidence: Medium

This is a retired first-party menu. It is first-party — the business’s own site, its own prices — but it is dated 2024-01-27 and the domain has since lapsed. Prices are recorded as evidence of what the business charged then, not as current prices. No aggregator (Truckster, StreetFoodFinder, Food Trucks Database, kcstreetfood) was used for pricing.

Tacos — $4 each

On hand-made corn tortillas, “a little bigger than street tacos,” topped with cilantro, onion, cucumber and diced habanero (on request).

ItemPrice (2024-01-27)
Barbacoa taco$4
Carnitas taco$4
Al Pastor taco$4
Chicken Fajita taco$4
Fajita Vegetables taco$4

Queca — $10

Large hand-made corn tortilla sandwiched with melted mozzarella, same fillings and garnishes. Marked “Gluten-free, Vegetarian” on the site (i.e. options exist; the label is the site’s own and is reproduced, not endorsed).

IgNachios — $12 each

Large bed of corn tortilla chips under nacho cheese, same garnishes, “then covered in a Mexican salsa flag.”

ItemPrice (2024-01-27)
Barbacoa IgNachios$12
Carnitas IgNachios$12
Al Pastor IgNachios$12
Chicken Fajita IgNachios$12

11 priced items captured, all from the first-party retired site. menu_status is partial rather than verified because a fifth IgNachios variant (Fajita Vegetables) is implied by the taco lineup but was not rendered in the retrieved capture, and because the prices are two and a half years stale.

Caution on template text. The archived page contains commented-out demo copy from the site template — a “Beef Taco with guacamole $6.99,” a “Burritos with cheese & guacamole $8.99,” and an “About Us” paragraph beginning “Hello Foody! We have traveled countless miles…” containing lorem ipsum. None of that is Barbacoa de Pecoso’s content; it is unedited theme boilerplate sitting inside HTML comments and is deliberately excluded from this page. Anyone re-reading the capture should not mistake it for menu or history.

Disputes

  • Fixed address. Food Trucks Database gives 7540 Leavenworth Rd;3 the business’s own site gave only “Kansas City, Kansas” plus a Google Maps short link (goo.gl/maps/RcbM5D6Y4cSEHaVR9, not resolved here).1 Recorded as provisional. ****
  • La Placita location. Bethany Park / 1120 Central Ave in the earlier record;45 Rock Island Bridge for the 2026 season per CABA’s own page.2 Both recorded — this is a relocation over time, not a contradiction.
  • Market cadence. KSHB (earlier) describes La Placita as bi-weekly; CABA’s current page advertises every Saturday May–September 2026.42 Again, change over time.
  • Twitter handle. The archived site embeds a widget for @Barbacoa_Pecoso; Food Trucks Database links to twitter.com/Barbacoa, which is a different and almost certainly wrong handle.13 Neither was opened. The directory link should not be trusted.
