Bicycle Depot KC opened in Waldo on 15 March 2022 — the Ides of March, as owner Dave Reinert put it — filling the hole left when the neighborhood’s previous bike shop went under two years earlier. It took that shop’s veteran mechanic with it. The store sits at 220 W 75th Street, across from the Aldi, and keeps a deliberately narrow line: State Bicycle Co. and Batch kids’ bikes, the basics in locks, tires, seats, bags and helmets, and a service bench that will take on e-bikes and anything else rolled through the door.

Description

Bicycle Depot KC is an independent bike shop and repair bench in Waldo, at 220 W 75th Street.1 It opened on 15 March 2022 under owner Dave Reinert, who described the timeline himself: “In February, I set a goal of saying, ‘Hey, March 15, let’s open it.’ And that was like a month out. We knew it was kind of an ambitious goal, but on the Ides of March we opened the door, and we were ready.”2

The shop describes its catchment as “Customers in Waldo, Brookside, and Beyond,” and locates itself for visitors as “across from Aldi’s next to Littlefield Eye Associates in the tallest building in Waldo.”1 Its stated line is “We Go The Extra Mile So That You Can Too.”1

The retail selection is narrow on purpose. Bicycle Depot is an official dealer for State Bicycle Co. of Arizona and for Batch Bicycles, whose line covers small children’s bikes, and it stocks LEM helmets plus the everyday consumables — locks, tires, seats, bags, helmets.12 The weight of the business sits on the service side: tune-ups and maintenance, repairs beginning with a free no-obligation assessment by certified mechanics, and same-day work where possible.1 The shop takes all bike types and states explicitly that it works on e-bikes.1

The shop’s second figure is its mechanic, Bruce Homstad, who came from Family Bicycles — the Waldo shop that had operated on Broadway and went out of business in early 2020.2 Reinert credited that continuity directly: “With his expertise, it’s made a lot of the business kind of decisions and choices easier because he’s done it for so long, because he has 13 years of working right here in this neighborhood and that comes with a very loyal following.”2 Homstad’s own framing of the job is a good statement of what a neighborhood service bench is: “The minute [a new bike] comes in here, I feel like I am now responsible for all of its maintenance. I know I’m gonna see this bike again and again, so I really can’t afford to screw up. I have taken care of a lot of people’s bikes for a long time.”2

History

Bicycle Depot KC opened on 15 March 2022 at 220A W 75th Street.2 It arrived into a specific vacancy: Waldo had lost Family Bicycles, which went out of business in early 2020, and the new shop hired that shop’s mechanic.2 The neighborhood’s other cycling business had also thinned out over the same period; the metro-wide contraction of independent bike retail through the late 2010s is documented in trade press for the Kansas City market.3

Reinert’s stated bet at opening was on rising fuel prices and everyday utility cycling rather than on enthusiast sales: “People start to realize that they can ride bikes every day, and really enjoy it and go, ‘wow, I don’t have to pay so much for gas.’”2 He read the local trend as steepening — “We’re a little behind certain cities, but in the last five years I’ve seen it double in popularity at least. I used to go out for a ride and see almost no one out on the trails. Now, I’ll cross paths with five or 10 people all the time” — and named the Blue River and the Rock Island Trail as the riding he does himself.2

No further history was located. The shop’s own site carries no about or history page beyond its contact and services material, and no coverage after the 2022 opening piece was found this pass.
