The Bicycle Shack has been a Lee’s Summit bike business since 1981, family owned, and it has quietly changed shape: its own Facebook page now describes repairs “from our home shop,” mobile repair, and pick-up and delivery, and lists its category as Bicycle Repair Service rather than a store. Its old website no longer serves pages to anyone and forwards to Facebook instead. What survives is a phone number, a 1.2-mile-from-the-Rock-Island-Trail address on SW Fascination Drive, and forty-five years of a metro’s worth of bikes.
Description
The Bicycle Shack is an independent bicycle repair business in Lee’s Summit, registered as The Bicycle Shack, LLC and listed at 3365 SW Fascination Drive.1 It is one of the metro’s longest-running bicycle businesses, dated to 1981 by material that is no longer directly retrievable.2
Its current form is the notable thing. The shop’s own Facebook page — which it lists as its website — categorises the business as a Bicycle Repair Service, leaves the Address field empty, and carries this in the contact block: “Now offering repairs from our home shop, mobile repair services as well as pick-up and delivery options available. Please call or text 816-761-3233.”3 That is not the description of a storefront. The Bicycle Shack appears to have moved from a shop floor to a home workshop plus a mobile service, which is a real and increasingly common model in bicycle repair — and a very different consumer proposition from a walk-in store. Anyone routing here should call or text first rather than turn up.
The page is active rather than abandoned: it carries some 2.5 thousand followers, 89 reviews at 100 percent recommendation, and a run of recent short-form video posts, several with four-figure and one with five-figure view counts.3 Whatever the premises, the business is trading.
Historically the Shack was a full-line shop. A Katy Trail and Rock Island Trail services directory lists it as Bike Shop, Bike Rental, approximately 1.2 miles from the trail — rental in particular is a storefront service and dates that listing to the earlier configuration.1 Search-surfaced material describing the shop’s own former website reports a family-owned, full-service shop operating since 1981 with road, mountain, fitness, comfort and kids’ bikes, plus service, repair and rental, “helping south Kansas City and the surrounding area with their cycling needs” for 40-plus years.2 None of that page is now reachable.

History
The Bicycle Shack dates itself to 1981 and describes itself as family owned and operated, having served south Kansas City and the surrounding area for over forty years.2 Both claims come from the shop’s own former website as surfaced in search results; the site itself now returns HTTP 403 Forbidden to every request attempted this pass — direct fetch, browser-headed request, and a rendering scraper alike — and resolves through to the business’s Facebook page.3 The founding year is therefore recorded as unverified rather than confirmed, which is a frustrating outcome for a forty-five-year-old business and one that a single phone call would fix.
The business is now registered and listed as The Bicycle Shack, LLC, at 3365 SW Fascination Drive in Lee’s Summit.1 The shift from storefront to home shop and mobile service is documented only by the shop’s own current Facebook contact block; no date for the change was located.3
That transition should be read against the wider contraction of independent bicycle retail in the Kansas City metro. Between 2018 and 2022 the metro lost Turner’s Cycling and Fitness of Overland Park, founded 1960 and once one of the Midwest’s largest Schwinn dealers, which closed in June 2019; Family Bicycles of Waldo, which went out of business in early 2020; and, on the evidence of lapsed domains now serving unrelated content, Velo+ of Lenexa and Volker Bicycles of West 39th Street.45 A shop that answers that pressure by dropping the shopfront and keeping the wrench is following a legible strategy, not failing.
