Brookside Animal Clinic is a veterinarian-owned small-animal general practice at 210 West 85th Street in Waldo, operating from the same building for more than fifty years. Two veterinarians run it — Steven L. Smith, DVM, a University of Missouri graduate and two-term past president of the Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association, and Teri L. Schenkelberg, DVM, who has been at the clinic for thirty-two years. The practice keeps its own in-house diagnostic laboratory, does digital radiography and ultrasound, offers grooming by a certified veterinary technician, and states plainly on its own site that it will work within a full range of budgets so that pets presented with illness receive treatment options. No corporate parent or veterinary consolidator appears anywhere in its materials.

Description

Brookside Animal Clinic is a two-veterinarian small-animal general practice on West 85th Street, a block off Wornall Road in the Waldo business district. Despite the name, the clinic sits inside the Waldo trade area and is listed in the Waldo Area Business Association’s member directory.1

The practice describes itself as having provided care to the south Kansas City community “from the same location for the last 50+ years.”2 Its two veterinarians hold a combined seventy-plus years of companion-animal experience, and the clinic notes that its support staff carries over fifty years of experience of its own.2

The clinic runs an in-house diagnostic laboratory, which it presents as a deliberate choice rather than a convenience: many blood-work and testing results are available during the office visit itself, so that “another day is not wasted waiting for results” when a pet is ill.3 It also operates digital radiographic and ultrasound imaging, a carbon-dioxide surgical laser, and a Class IV K-Laser therapeutic device.32

Two features distinguish the practice from a generic general practice. First, its groomer, Cathy Harman, is also a certified veterinary technician — the clinic notes that this training lets her recognise potential health problems in their early stages.24 Second, the clinic states on its own About page that it is “willing to work within a full range of budgets for health care so that all of the pets presented with illness concerns will receive treatment options.”2 Its veterinarians also perform spay and neuter surgeries in cooperation with Another Chance Pet Rescue.2

History

The clinic’s own account of its history is brief: more than fifty years of practice at 210 West 85th Street, serving south Kansas City.2 It does not name a founder or a founding year on any current page, and the Compiler could not source one.

What is documented is the tenure of the present veterinarians. Steven L. Smith, DVM graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine and has practised as a general practitioner for thirty-nine years; he is a member of the AVMA, the Missouri VMA, the Kansas City VMA, the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology and the MAVP, and served two terms as president of the KCVMA.4 Teri L. Schenkelberg, DVM is a 1989 graduate of Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, came to Kansas City thirty-four years ago, and has been at Brookside Animal Clinic for thirty-two of them.4

Dr. Smith lives on a small farm outside the city that he calls the “Waymore Ranch” — a name he explains as meaning there are way more pets there than there ought to be.4
