Byrd's Hot Chicken

Byrd’s Hot Chicken is a halal Nashville-style hot-chicken counter in Unit B of the small strip at 3801 Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kansas, directly across the street from the Leavenworth Road Texas Tom’s. It is the Kansas City franchise of a California-born chain whose whole premise is “Real Heat, Real Halal”: fresh, hand-breaded halal chicken as tenders, sandwiches, wings and a “Byrd Bomb,” sold mostly to go. Aggregator copy describes the KCK store as women-owned; the local franchisee has not been named in any source found.

Description

Byrd’s sits in the B unit of a small commercial strip on the north side of Leavenworth Road at 38th Street, in the Quindaro-area corridor of northern KCK. The address reads 3801-B on the storefront and in listings; delivery platforms file it as “3801 Leavenworth Road, Unit B.”¹² Apple Maps records takeout and delivery, contactless payment and a small handful of reviews; there is no first-party page for the KCK store other than its Facebook and Instagram accounts.¹³

The brand’s pitch is the same at every unit: “Nashville-style hot chicken with a California twist,” built on “fresh, hand-breaded halal chicken sandwiches, tenders, wings, and sides.” Its site devotes a page to what halal means and says chicken comes from halal-certified suppliers, with prep areas and oil kept separate and staff trained in handling.⁴ The core menu is short — Byrd’s Classic Sandwich, a 3 Fingers Meal, the Byrd Bomb, an 8-wings-get-12 deal, Byrd’s Wrap, Mac N Cheese and a kids’ “Happy Byrd’s” — and the KCK store’s platform listings add Byrd Bomb Fries.⁴² A Michigan franchisee interviewed at that state’s second opening described the method as never-frozen, never-pre-battered chicken on a two-day marinade, with most of the sauces made in-house daily.⁵

Grubhub’s store description, which is typically operator-supplied, calls the KCK store “this women-owned restaurant located on Leavenworth Road known for its crispy fried chicken tenders and sandwiches.”² The Registry carries that as provisional until an owner is named. Yelp files the store as a “Chicken Shop” with reviews through July 2026; Instagram posts continue into 2026.⁶³

Directly across Leavenworth Road, at 3800, is one of the surviving units of the 1950s Kansas City chain Texas Tom’s — a fried-chicken and burger stand of a very different lineage, and a useful landmark for finding Byrd’s.⁷

Ownership and history

Byrd’s Hot Chicken “began in Anaheim” and franchises; its site lists units in Illinois, Indiana, Florida and Michigan alongside California, with Chicago-area stores in Skokie, Naperville, Schaumburg, Libertyville, Vernon Hills and the city itself, Florida stores in Boynton Beach and Pembroke Pines, and Michigan stores in Novi (January 2024) and Canton (October 31, 2025).⁴⁸⁵ The brand’s founders and founding year are not stated on its site. The Canton report names Syed Zahid, Srini Chaganti and Chandan Nayak as the partners behind the Michigan stores, and Zahid describes first encountering Byrd’s as a customer — the pattern of a franchisee, not a founder.⁵

The Kansas City, Kansas store is the brand’s only Kansas City–area unit found. No press coverage, opening announcement or owner interview has surfaced; the store’s opening date, the franchisee’s name and whether the operator lives in the metro are all open.¹⁶ A KC food-review Facebook page has posted about it, which is the closest thing to local coverage located.⁹
