The Deli Grind is a deli, scratch bakery and small grocery counter at 8005 The Paseo, Kansas City, MO 64131, in the Marlborough neighborhood. It opened February 2, 2026 under Sheree Hudson, a tax preparer of 22 years who bought the business — recipes included — from Allie “Miss Vee” Toney, who had run Vee’s Sweets & Treats at the same address since 2008 and closed it on Christmas Eve 2025 to retire. Hudson kept the sandwich and pastry program and the shelves of grocery staples Toney had stocked for a neighborhood with no supermarket since the store at 85th and Holmes closed. Tier 1 — single independent storefront, owner-operated, no parent company.1234
Description
The Deli Grind occupies a narrow storefront at 8005 The Paseo, on the Marlborough stretch of the boulevard in south Kansas City. It does three things at once, all inherited from the shop that preceded it: a scratch bakery running from 4 a.m., a sandwich counter cutting meat and cheese by the pound to order, and a small grocery shelf.1
The bakery side turns out glazed doughnuts, oversized apple fritters, cinnamon rolls, long johns, cookies, cake and pie.13 The deli side builds sandwiches on bread baked in-house — onion, wheat or white buns — with meat and cheese sliced on site rather than pre-portioned.1 The house special is turkey, pastrami and salami with lettuce, tomato and pickle; the Martin City Telegraph reported it at $13.50 with a bag of chips and a cookie in March 2026, while the shop’s own ordering page lists a House Special sandwich at $14.04 as of August 2026 — see Menu for how those differ.13
The grocery component is the part that matters structurally. Marlborough sits in what local reporting describes as a food desert; the nearest supermarket, at 85th and Holmes, closed around 2020. Toney had kept a shelf of convenience staples for neighbours who could not easily get to a grocery store, and Hudson continued it — two floor-to-ceiling shelves of sugar, flour, canned goods, snacks, dairy and toiletries, which she said she intends to expand and customise over time.1 The shop’s own ordering system carries a GROCERIES category of roughly seventy-five items — bread, milk, eggs, rice, pasta, cereal, oatmeal, canned vegetables, condiments, jerky, yoghurt — which corroborates that this is a real second business line and not a token rack.3
Hudson also said she would keep two of Toney’s neighbourhood practices: a free doughnut for students after school, and a punch card for free combos.1
Ownership and history
Owner: Sheree Hudson (since 2026). Hudson worked as a tax preparer for 22 years and held a full-time job with the Hickman Mills School District, which she left to take the shop on — “I was stepping out in faith.” She had been Toney’s accountant, and it was preparing Toney’s books for prospective buyers that prompted her own offer: “After seeing her numbers I thought ‘I might want to buy this business!’” She frames the purchase as a move for residual income and a long-held ambition to run a deli.1 Hudson and Toney were not strangers — Toney went to school with Hudson’s mother, and the families were acquainted.2
Address lineage — Vee’s Sweets & Treats, 8005 The Paseo, 2008–2025
The succession is confirmed and well documented; The Deli Grind is a genuine continuation of the same business, not merely the same address.
- Allie “Vee” Toney and her husband Andrew Toney opened Vee’s Sweets & Treats in 2008. Toney had worked in delis and bakeries — she named M & M and Lamar’s — since she was young.2
- The Toneys opened the shop after recovering from addiction: “After we got clean and sober we decided to do something better. So we opened up the shop.”2
- Andrew Toney died in 2019, leaving the workload to his widow.2
- Vee’s traded on doughnuts, fritters “as big as your face,” breakfast sandwiches, cookies, pie and deli sandwiches, and Toney was a recognised neighbourhood figure — greeted as “Miss Vee” on the street.2
- Toney closed the shop on Christmas Eve 2025 to retire, at nearly 68: “I’m fixing to be 68. It’s time for me to do something else.”2 The Martin City Telegraph describes the same closure as coming after “17 years of early rising,” at the end of 2025.1
- Toney sold the business, including her recipes, to Hudson. Hudson targeted a February reopening under the new name.2
- Vee’s Facebook page ran under the handle
FatSandwiches; the Star linked to it as the shop’s page.25
No Registry page exists for Vee’s Sweets & Treats as of 2026-08-13; this section is the address lineage of record.
Legal entity: — no Missouri registration, fictitious-name filing, or business licence record was retrieved this pass, so the operating entity behind The Deli Grind is unconfirmed. Whether Hudson bought assets or an entity is also.
Menu
menu_status: verified — items and prices below are taken from the business’s own Clover online-ordering catalogue at thedeligrind.smartonlineorder.com, read on 2026-08-13.3 No aggregator (DoorDash, Grubhub, Seamless, Yelp) pricing is reproduced anywhere on this page.
Two caveats stated plainly. First, prices on an online-ordering catalogue can sit above the in-store counter price; the Telegraph’s reported $13.50 house-special combo (sandwich, chips, cookie) versus the ordering site’s $14.04 house-special sandwich may reflect that gap, a later price rise, or a different bundle. Both are recorded; neither is corrected against the other.13 Second, several catalogue entries list $0.00 — the by-weight deli meats and cheeses, and some salads — meaning they are priced in store, not free. Those are marked “ for price.
