Display Studios is a display, exhibit and dimensional-signage fabricator at 5420 Kansas Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, in business since 1937 and describing itself as employee-owned. It designs and builds trade show exhibits, museum and retail displays, dimensional signage and graphics in its own shop, with carpentry, graphics production, installation and freight logistics handled in house and a Class A truck fleet that hauls the work to convention centres nationwide. It is one of the older continuously operating fabrication shops in Wyandotte County.

Description

Display Studios is a fabrication shop rather than a print counter. Its work is three-dimensional: trade show booths and exhibits, museum environments, corporate and retail displays, and dimensional signage, produced from design through carpentry, graphics, finishing, crating and on-site installation.12 The company describes itself as offering turn-key exhibit solutions — full design, fabrication, graphics production, installation, logistics and show-services planning — which is to say it takes a project from drawing to a convention-centre floor without subcontracting the middle.2

The plant sits on Kansas Avenue in the Argentine–Turner industrial corridor of Kansas City, Kansas, in the 66106 zip.34 Its staff listing shows the shape of the operation: a president and vice presidents of operations and production, a controller and office administration, three account managers, a graphics group with a senior designer and a production artist, a fabrication group with a carpentry lead, a production lead and a senior designer-fabricator, and a production and logistics group with installation specialists and a dock.5 The company runs its own trade show freight — its careers page recruits Class A CDL drivers to transport booths and displays to venues across the country.6

Display Studios states that it has been in Kansas City since 1937 and that it is employee-owned.156 Both claims come from the company itself and no outside instrument confirming them was located in this pass; the 1937 date is repeated across its home page, about page and careers page, but that is one source repeating itself.

History

Display Studios dates its Kansas City presence to 1937 and, as of its current site, describes itself as having operated for over 87 years.15 That places its founding in the era when the display trade in Kansas City served department stores, downtown window merchants and regional trade expositions, and predates the modern convention-exhibit industry entirely.

Little of the intervening history is documented publicly. The company’s own narrative is written in the present tense and gives no founder, no ownership succession and no account of how it arrived at employee ownership.5 The Wyandotte Economic Development Council carries it in its local-owned business directory under printing, at the Kansas Avenue address.7 The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce lists it as “Display Designers and Producers” at the same address.4

Reconstructing the 1937-to-present line would require Kansas Secretary of State filings, Kansas City Kansas city directories, and Kansas City Star or Kansas City Business Journal archive coverage — none of which were reachable in this pass.
