Description

Donut King is an all-day Northland donut counter rather than a sell-out-by-mid-morning shop. The first-party story page lists 48 donut types plus pastries, cupcakes, cakes, and gourmet coffee, with a daily 2–4 p.m. deal noted in the site footer.12 disKCovery’s 2024 donut survey described yeast and cake donuts, crullers, old-fashioneds, Bismarcks, fritters, turnovers, and cronuts, plus cinnamon rolls, danishes, kolaches, and brownies; staffer Shelby Ellison (there since 2016) said variety and knowing regulars by name are the shop’s distinction.3

Ownership and history

C.W. Chiles moved his Southern Pride Donuts from St. John Avenue to 3913 Chouteau Trafficway in 1969 and shortened the name to Donut King.2

Kathy Sivers had worked at the shop from that 1969 opening and bought it in 1983 when Chiles put it up for sale.2

John and Lauren Cone took over in October 1996 with no prior bakery experience; the first-party account says the prior owners handed over the recipe book.23

In fall 2010, Chouteau Trafficway expansion forced a move. The Cones brought on Lauren’s sister Kristen and her husband Jeff as partners and relocated to the current Armour Road shop.2 disKCovery (2024) said Kristin (spelling) Linder is the partner who primarily runs the shop day to day; last name and the “i” spelling are not on the official site. on legal last names and day-to-day operator.3
