Description
Dragonfly Tea Zone is a bubble tea and tea house at 409 Main Street inside Kansas City’s historic City Market, in the River Market. It is the original location of a four-shop, Kansas City-owned group; the others are at Creekwood Common Center in the Northland, on West 39th Street, and in the Oak Park Mall food court in Overland Park.1
The Johnson County Post reported in February 2025 that owner Doug Phung opened the business as a River Market kiosk called Boba Express in 2003, moved into permanent brick-and-mortar space at the market three years later under the name Lollicup Tea Zone, and eventually rebranded to Dragonfly Tea Zone. Phung, previously an IT consultant, said he had wanted to fill a gap in the local market after encountering the density of bubble tea shops on the West Coast while visiting his brother in California; he told the paper he was interested in further Kansas-side locations because “Kansas is a very big tea-drinker market.”2
The drink menu runs to bubble and milk teas served iced or frozen — almond, original, chocolate, coconut, honeydew, jasmine, lavender, papaya, taro, Thai iced tea, Vietnamese iced coffee and fruit bubble teas — customizable with tapioca boba, popping fruit pearls, coconut jellies or coffee jelly. Alongside them are mixed and single-flavor smoothies, juice-based nutrition smoothies, hot and iced tea and coffee lattes (masala chai, London Fog, matcha, rooibos vanilla chai, caramel, mocha), and fresh-squeezed lemonades and limeades. The kitchen makes sweet crepes to order. The shop also sells loose leaf tea by the category — black, green, white, herbal, oolong, rooibos, chai, yerba mate, fruit tisanes — plus teaware, through the counter and through an online store that ships, with free shipping over $55.13 Catering is offered, and the company runs a rewards app.1
