Ebenezer Shop is an independent general-merchandise and apparel store on Independence Avenue in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast, owned by Marie François, selling clothing, shoes, accessories, and perfumes as what she calls a “one stop shop” for the neighborhood.
Description
Ebenezer Shop is a small independent retail store on Independence Avenue in the Historic Northeast, stocking women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing along with shoes, accessories, and perfumes.1 Owner Marie François describes the business as a “one stop shop,” telling Northeast News: “It’s my pleasure to sell shoes and clothes, many little things people find that they need… people always find what they need.”1
The store’s inventory is not sourced from any single country or importer. François selects products online based on what she judges will be practical for the customers who come through her door.1 She has said she would be open to partnering with vendors to help import and sell goods, but has no such arrangements at present.1
The shop’s name comes from scripture — François has said she found “Ebenezer” in a verse in the Bible when choosing a name for the business.1
Asked what she values most about owning a business in the Historic Northeast, François cited the ability to set her own schedule and to sell products directly to the community.1 She has no current plans for a second location, though she said she would consider one if the opportunity arose.1
Ownership and history
Marie François has owned Ebenezer Shop since roughly 2022 — the September 2025 Northeast News profile describes her as having owned it “for the past three years.”1 The business originally operated from 3017½ Independence Ave. In March 2025, François moved it a short distance west to 2600 Independence Ave to gain a larger space.1 A first-party social post lists the address as 2600 Independence Avenue, Suite 107.2
François is not new to the neighborhood. She has visited the Historic Northeast since the early 2000s to attend church services, and at one time lived just off Woodland Avenue.1 “It’s a good place, there’s many people around here; it’s given me a good place to put my [roots],” she told the paper.1
