Empanada Madness is Andrea Penaloza’s Venezuelan-Colombian restaurant — started with her mother Patricia Fernandez in 2013 at 906 SW Boulevard and now anchored at Crown Center. Arepas, empanadas, tequenos, pabellón, bandeja paisa. The spot where Salvador Pérez gets his hit.

Description

Empanada Madness is Andrea Penaloza’s decade-plus mission to bring Venezuelan and Colombian cooking to Kansas City. Penaloza, who came to KC from Venezuela, launched the concept in 2013 with her mother Patricia Fernandez at 906 Southwest Boulevard — a block of KC that has long been the city’s most authentic Latin food corridor. After a decade on SW Blvd, the concept expanded to Crown Center, where a second location now operates. The menu is rooted in Venezuelan staples: arepas filled with shredded chicken, black beans and plantain, beef, or cheese; the classic pabellón criollo (rice, black beans, shredded beef, sweet plantain); and bandeja paisa (the Colombian feast-plate). Empanadas, churros, tequenos (cheese-stuffed fried dough), and patacones (twice-fried plantain) round out the menu. Kansas City Royals star Salvador Pérez is reportedly a loyal regular — and the restaurant is planning a third location to serve Royals fans near the new stadium. Catering and delivery available.

Tier classification

Tier 2 — Venezuelan-born, KC-dedicated 13-year operator. Andrea Penaloza was born in Venezuela — not KC-born/raised.1 She came to Kansas City and opened Empanada Madness in 2013 with her mother, building it over 13 years into a multi-location KC Venezuelan/Colombian restaurant institution. Women-owned and operated (mother-daughter co-founders). Tier 2 on KC-dedicated immigrant grounds.
