Fiddly Fig is an independent florist and gift shop at 9716 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131, owned by Sheryl White. The White/Shannahan family bought the trade name in 1985; the shop sat in Brookside at 22 W. 63rd Street from 1995 until March 2020, then merged with sister shop Teefey Flowers at the present Holmes Road storefront. Missouri, not Kansas.
Description
Fiddly Fig occupies 9716 Holmes Road in south Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri — ZIP 64131 — on the Holmes commercial strip around 96th/97th Street. That is not Kansas City, Kansas, and it is not the Brookside storefront the shop left in 2020.123 The first-party site is a BloomNation-powered shop on the shop’s own domain. It publishes the Holmes Road address, the 816 number, hours, an online catalog (flowers, plants, wedding consultation, gifts including KC-skyline items, candles, books, puzzles, jewelry, plush), and a 100% replacement guarantee.2
KMBC (May 2024) located the shop “near 96th and Holmes” and interviewed White as owner during the Mother’s Day rush.3 KSHB (April 2025) called it The Fiddly Fig Flowers and Boutique at 9716 Holmes Rd. and quoted White on imported-flower costs.4 Visit KC’s listing uses the Holmes address and the same hours as the first-party site, but still places the business under Brookside — leftover filing from the 63rd Street years, not a second location.5
This page is not a chain florist, not an order-relay “local florist” mill, and not Teefey Flowers as a separate operating shop. Teefey was the sister store at this Holmes address; Martin City Telegraph reported the two merged here in 2020 under the Fiddly Fig name, with the Teefey sign kept in the back room.67
Pitch 2026 — first-party claim, not an award fact on this pass. The shop’s Instagram (@thefiddlyfig / @TheFiddlyFig) posted: “Thank you #KansasCity for voting @TheFiddlyFig the Best #Florist and Best #Wedding Florist 2026! And thank you @thepitchkc !”8 The same caption is embedded on fiddlyfig.com.1 The Pitch’s own Best of KC 2026 winner pages (bestofkc2026.thepitchkc.com florist and wedding-florist URLs) returned only a JS “LOADING” shell this pass; vote.thepitchkc.com still titled itself a nomination round. Those Pitch URLs are therefore not treated as a readable winners list. Visit KC separately says the shop “has been named Best Florist by The Pitch Magazine and Ingram’s Magazine” without a year.5 The 2026 Best Florist / Best Wedding Florist titles stay a first-party claim until a Pitch winners page can be read.
Ownership and history
Sheryl White is named as owner on the first-party About page (headshot and byline), by KSHB, and by KMBC.243 Martin City Telegraph (Jill Draper, 18 January 2020) states that White’s father, Jim Shannahan, a former educator and school superintendent, purchased Teefey and the Fiddly Fig; White joined him out of college with a business degree in 1985; he ran the business side and she the creative side; and that as of that January 2020 piece he had died seven years earlier, after which she became owner/manager.6 The Brookside Business Association’s undated “Faces of BKS” profile (still written as if the Brookside shop were current) tells the same 1985 purchase and names the father Jim, without the surname.9 Those are not two fathers.
The BBA profile is the source for the name: earlier owners from the 1960s sold mostly houseplants, including a fiddle-leaf fig; the shop sat where Red Door Woodfired Grill later was on Brookside Plaza; a second set of owners kept the name and shifted toward flowers before selling to Shannahan and White.9 First-party About copy does not narrate that origin. It is recorded as BBA reporting, not as a first-party founding story.
In 1995 White and her father moved Fiddly Fig into 22 West 63rd Street, the former combined fire-and-police station in brookside (fire-station-21-police-station-3). The BBA profile and Block & Company both date that occupancy 1995; Block & Company (27 July 2022) says the florist was there from 1995 to March 2020 and “has since relocated to South Kansas City, Missouri.”910 The Kansas City Star (Joyce Smith, updated 13 December 2019) — full text not fetched this pass (HTTP/2 stream error); claims below are from the publicly indexed lead — wrote that Sheryl and Joe White purchased that building in 1995 with her late father, would close the Brookside shop in late March, and would move to 9716 Holmes Road, combining with Teefey under the Fiddly Fig name. Joe Zwillenberg is named as the buyer of the Brookside building.11 MCT’s January 2020 piece names Zwillenberg the same way and does not name Joe White as a shop owner; shop ownership in MCT, KSHB, KMBC, and the About page is Sheryl’s.6 Those titles are not collapsed.
MCT (Kathy Feist, 12 September 2020) reported the Holmes shop reopened in May 2020 after the March Brookside close, still under White, with Brookside doors reused as backdrops and designers from both shops retained.7
Missouri Secretary of State entity name was not searched this pass. “
KSHB (17 April 2025) quotes White on “the last 40 years since operating her flower shop,” which aligns with 1985 and is duration reporting, not a second founding date.4
