Golden Gate Funeral & Cremation Services, LLC is an independent, Black-owned funeral home at 2800 East 18th Street in Kansas City, Missouri, a member of the Heartland Black Chamber of Commerce. It occupies the East 18th Street premises formerly used by Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, the city’s oldest Black-owned funeral business. It is unusual in the trade for publishing its full package pricing openly on its own site — direct cremation at $845 and formal funeral packages up to $5,950 — and it operates a “Fund A Family” assistance programme. Its founding year and ownership are not yet established from a first-party source.
Description
Golden Gate Funeral & Cremation Services, LLC is a funeral home at 2800 East 18th Street in Kansas City, Missouri, east of the 18th and Vine district. It is a Black-owned independent business and a member of the Heartland Black Chamber of Commerce.12
Its premises carry the trade’s local history: the Clio historical encyclopedia records that Golden Gate now occupies the East 18th Street building formerly used by Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, founded 1909 and described as Kansas City’s first Black-owned licensed business, which has since moved to a chapel on Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard.3 See watkins-heritage-chapel.
Two features distinguish the firm on the public record. The first is price transparency. Funeral pricing is characteristically difficult to obtain in this trade, and Golden Gate publishes its full package list on its own site with itemised inclusions and exclusions: a direct cremation package at $845, a memorial cremation package at $1,995, a “Noble” cremation package including embalming and visitation at $4,500, immediate burial at $1,795, a formal funeral service package at $4,750, and a “Prestige” package including embalming, visitation and funeral escort at $5,950. The packages state plainly what is not included — death certificates, cremation permits, urns, newspaper notifications, oversize removal — rather than leaving those to the arrangement conference.14
The second is an explicit affordability commitment. The firm’s stated mission is to serve families “regardless of financial status,” and its site carries a “Fund A Family” programme and a “Helping Hands Partners” section.1
The staff page names DiMond Piggie as chief operations officer, a licensed funeral director in both Kansas and Missouri and a licensed insurance agent, holding a B.S. from Norfolk State University and a master’s in accounting and financial management from Keller Graduate School of Management. Angela D. Husband is a Missouri-licensed funeral director, a Chicago native who has worked in funeral service since 1994 and joined Golden Gate in 2013; she is treasurer of the Missouri-Kansas Funeral Directors & Embalmers Association and a member of the Missouri State Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association and the National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association.1

History
The firm’s own site does not narrate a founding history, and no first-party statement of its founding year or ownership was located. A third-party business listing describes it as locally owned and established in 2016, and the Better Business Bureau records accreditation from April 17, 2017.5 Against that, the biography of Missouri-licensed funeral director Angela D. Husband on the firm’s own staff page states that she “joined our staff of dedicated professionals in 2013,” which is inconsistent with a 2016 founding.1 The founding year is therefore recorded here as unresolved.
What is documented is the premises. Watkins Brothers Funeral Home — opened 1909 by Theron B. Watkins and his brother, and the launching point for the political career of Bruce R. Watkins — operated for years from a building on East 18th Street before moving to 4000 Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard as Watkins Heritage Chapel. Clio records that the East 18th Street building it left is now home to Golden Gate Funeral and Cremation Services.3 The continuity of Black-owned funeral service at that address, across two unrelated firms and more than a century, is the notable historical fact available about this location.
