Grounded Sole Coffeehouse is a nonprofit coffee shop at 3417 Strong Ave in the Argentine neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, run as a ministry of Barefoot Mission — the nonprofit that Taylor and Jimmy Penrod founded after moving from Johnson County into Argentine in the late 2010s. Barefoot Mission bought and renovated a vacant Strong Avenue building in 2021 and opened the coffeehouse in 2022, after surveying residents about what the neighborhood actually wanted. It serves drip coffee, seasonal lattes and pastries from local bakers, and job-develops young adults from the neighborhood.
Description
Grounded Sole Coffeehouse sits at 3417 Strong Avenue in Argentine, the old railroad and smelter neighborhood on the south side of Kansas City, Kansas. It is a ministry of Barefoot Mission, a Wyandotte County 501(c)(3) founded by Taylor Penrod — a pastor at Overland Park Church of Christ — and her husband Jimmy Penrod, a teacher. The two moved out of Johnson County and into Kansas City, Kansas specifically so that the work would be done from inside the neighborhood rather than commuted into it: as Penrod put it to KSHB, they did not want to arrive, declare what the community needed, and drive back.
The coffeehouse came third, after several years of other Barefoot Mission work in Argentine — the Argentine Wellness Center run in partnership with Metropolitan Avenue Methodist Church, and later the Avenue Youth House for homeless young women aged 16 to 24. After roughly three years serving the area, the organization concluded that what Argentine lacked was somewhere to simply gather. The design brief came from surveying residents. A vacant Strong Avenue building was bought and renovated in 2021, and Grounded Sole held its grand opening in October 2022. At the time, KSHB framed the block in terms of what Argentine had been going without: numerous vacant buildings and very little investment in quality-of-life amenities as opposed to basic retail.
Barefoot Mission states the coffeehouse’s purpose as being “a sacred space in the community” — one that welcomes all, knows customers by name, uses its resources to serve the neighborhood, and job-develops local young adults. The job-training component was reported at opening as launching within the following months. The shop is also described as providing work experience for young adults with disabilities. “ — that specific detail appears in the Wyandotte County CVB’s write-up but not in the first-party or press sources consulted.
The counter runs drip coffee, espresso drinks, seasonal lattes and matcha, with pastries brought in from local bakers — Hana’s Donuts among them. The room hosts community events; the Argentine Betterment Corporation has used it for a neighborhood game night. Discounts are offered to educators and to Wyandotte County and Argentine residents. “ on the current discount terms, which are reported in directory write-ups rather than published first-party.
