Groundhouse Coffee & Bakery is an independent coffeehouse and scratch bakery at 103 S. Elm St., Gardner, KS 66030, in the city’s downtown district. It opened in January 2012 under founders Beth and Steve Hines; Keith Davenport took over in 2024 and runs it with co-owner Allison Davenport. A second, drive-thru-only site at 18855 S. Gardner Road closed July 3, 2025, consolidating the business into the downtown room. It serves espresso, coffee and specialty teas — first-party marketing names Parisi Artisan Coffee as its bean — plus in-house baked goods, and rents the room for private events. Tier 1 — single independent room, locally owned, no parent company.1234
Description
Groundhouse occupies a corner of downtown Gardner at Elm and Main-block scale, and positions itself explicitly against the drive-thru model: a room to sit in rather than a queue to clear. Its own site publishes almost nothing beyond location, hours and phone, under the tagline “Where Coffee Breath is Worth It,” with two additional functions — private events, booked through a first-party Calendly, and online ordering through a first-party Cash App link.1
The business-supplied Gardner Chamber listing describes it as a community gathering space “designed to encourage relaxation and meaningful conversation,” serving coffee, espresso and specialty teas and “proudly serving Parisi Artisan Coffee,” offering Wi-Fi and to-go service while deliberately avoiding a rushed environment, and available for meetings.3
The identity is the operating logic, not just marketing. When the owner closed the second site in 2025 he framed it as a culture decision rather than a purely financial one: the highway-adjacent drive-thru “attracted customers wanting quick service,” which conflicted with the downtown room’s community-café reputation.2
The kitchen is broader than the trade name suggests, and the current site hides it. Until sometime between February and August 2026, groundhousecoffee.com carried a full first-party online-ordering store — eleven named categories running from espresso and signature lattes through a large savoury-and-sweet crepe list, breakfast burritos, platters, bowls, salads, a pastry case, gluten-free baking and catering.5 That store has since been removed; the live site now publishes only location, hours and phone, with ordering pushed to a Cash App link.1 The bakery half is confirmed by the trade name, the chamber’s “Bakery/Coffee Shops” category, and the 2025 plan to expand baked-goods sales through other venues.32 The store also published a first-party description for most of its products, recoverable from the archived product pages’ metadata; those descriptions are reproduced in Menu and show a kitchen doing scratch biscuits and gravy, chorizo burritos, gyro-and-tzatziki crepes and composed salads alongside the coffee. Prices remain undocumented — the retired store rendered them client-side and none survive in the archive. The live site has since been rebuilt on Squarespace and publishes a single page.1 See Menu.
Ownership and history
Groundhouse Coffee opened in January 2012 in downtown Gardner. Its founders were Beth and Steve Hines.2
The business later added a second site at 18855 S. Gardner Road, near the highway. Its indoor space never reopened after the pandemic, and from 2020 it ran as a drive-thru only.2
Keith Davenport took over the business in 2024. In 2025 he closed the Gardner Road drive-thru, on July 3, 2025, citing declining sales there against rising business downtown despite growth in the surrounding area — and, more pointedly, a mismatch of format and identity: “It was a business decision. We wanted to stay true to our culture… We wanted to maintain our reputation as a community-focused coffee café… The best decision we could make was to focus all our attention on the downtown location.” Seven of the newest employees were let go; the rest moved to the downtown room. Davenport said at the time that the business intended to expand baked-goods sales through other venues and that “exciting things” were coming, without detail.2
The Gardner Chamber’s business-supplied listing names Keith Davenport as Owner and Allison Davenport as Co-Owner, along with a general manager and an administrative manager. The listing still carries a “General Manager, South” title, apparently a residue of the closed Gardner Road site, and publishes evening hours (Mon–Thu to 9 p.m., Fri–Sat to 10 p.m.) that conflict with the 6 p.m. close on the company’s own website; the first-party site is preferred here and the chamber hours are treated as stale.32
Davenport has since become a public voice for downtown Gardner business generally: in August 2026 he was quoted by KSHB as the proprietor of Groundhouse Coffee, commenting on a proposed 335-acre arts, education and entertainment district for the city — “Gardner is one of the fastest-growing cities in the Kansas City metro.”4

menu_status: partial. Groundhouse ran a first-party online-ordering store atgroundhousecoffee.com/shop/…with a full product catalog. That store was removed from the live site between 2026-02-13 and 2026-08-13; today the site publishes only location, hours and phone, and its “Order Online” link resolves to a Cash App payment page rather than a priced menu.1 The catalog below is reconstructed from the store’s own archived category and product pages5 — the item names, category structure and dish descriptions are first-party, but the store’s prices were rendered client-side and were not captured by the archive, so no price is recoverable. Items are therefore listed without prices:. Per Registry rule, no delivery-platform, directory or aggregator prices are substituted. Seasonal items (eggnog, peppermint, pumpkin, shamrock, candy cane) rotate and are marked as such.
Where the descriptions come from. Each product in the retired store had its own page at groundhousecoffee.com/product/<slug>/<id>. The visible product copy was rendered client-side and is absent from the archived HTML, but the same text was written server-side into each page’s <meta name="description"> tag, which the archive did capture. 276 archived product pages were retrieved and 217 carry description copy; those are the descriptions reproduced below.5 Wording has been lightly normalised to the Registry’s neutral voice — ingredient lists, preparation and serving notes are the operator’s; purely promotional closing lines (“Order now…”, “Try them now…”) are dropped, and where a superlative is retained it is attributed to the operator in-line.
