Harvey Brothers Trucking & Wrecking is a family-owned demolition and dump-truck hauling contractor on Walker Avenue in north Kansas City, Kansas. Harley W. Harvey Sr. started it in 1958 with a secondhand dump truck bought from a meat company and nicknamed “Stinky,” hauling sand as Harvey Brothers Trucking; he added house demolition in June 1967 and renamed the firm. It incorporated in Kansas in August 1984, and Lynn A. McGinnis — an employee since 1985 — has been president since October 15, 2003. The shop is an Operating Engineers Local 101 union house of roughly eight to ten people doing residential, commercial, industrial and interior demolition plus underground storage tank removal.

Description

Harvey Brothers Trucking & Wrecking Co., Inc. is a demolition and hauling contractor operating from a yard at 1233 Walker Avenue in north Kansas City, Kansas.1 It takes both partial and complete demolition jobs — residential, commercial, industrial, interior strip-outs, and whole-site clearance — and runs a dump-truck fleet hauling dirt, rock, concrete, asphalt, sand, soil and stone.2 It is also licensed to remove underground storage tanks, a specialty that follows naturally from a century of gas stations and industrial sites in the county.2

The firm is licensed and bonded and is a member of the Operating Engineers Local 101 union.2 Its stated service area runs across the metro on both sides of the state line: in Kansas, Kansas City, Olathe, Shawnee, Leavenworth, Fairway, Edwardsville and Roeland Park; in Missouri, Lee’s Summit, Raymore, Independence, Parkville and Adrian.2

The company publishes an unusually candid staff page — a roster naming each employee, their start date and what they do, written in the first person and including a deceased long-time operator.2 It is the kind of first-party record that most contractors of this size do not put on the internet, and it is the primary reason this page can be written at the depth it is.

History

Harley W. Harvey Sr. bought an old dump truck from a meat company in 1958, named it “Stinky,” and began hauling sand as Harvey Brothers Trucking.2 In June 1967 he began demolishing houses and changed the name to Harvey Brothers Trucking & Wrecking.2 The business incorporated in the State of Kansas in August 1984 as Harvey Brothers Trucking & Wrecking Co., Inc.2

Most of the current bench came aboard in the 1980s: Edward “Ted” Jansen in June 1982, Joseph M. Harvey in March 1982, Harley Tim Harvey and Harley W. Harvey Jr. in 1985, and Lynn A. McGinnis on September 1, 1985.2 Harvey Sr. retired in 2002 but stayed president until October 15, 2003, when — in the company’s own telling — he was “fired” by Lynn; he remained on the board and kept demolishing structures occasionally, and died on January 9, 2014.2 McGinnis has been president since that 2003 handover and runs accounts, payroll, dispatch, permitting and customer relations.2 Jansen, who had been licensed for underground storage tank removal, died August 10, 2020.2

A later hire records a second small-business closure absorbed into this one: Danny Pettey, formerly the owner of McCulley Oil, delivered fuel and oil to Harvey Brothers for more than thirty years before his own company went out of business, and joined the crew on October 2, 2017.2
