Westport specialty café opened October 2025 by KC native Brett Janssen + fiancée Genisis Mejia, sourcing beans from their own family farm in Huila, Colombia. True farm-to-cup vertical integration — they grow, roast, and serve their own coffee, a model essentially unique in the KC metro.
Description
Janssen’s House Coffee opened in October 2025 at 4041 Broadway Blvd in Westport, the brick-and-mortar expression of a coffee operation built by Brett Janssen, a Kansas City native, and his fiancée Genisis Mejia, a Colombian native.1 Janssen grew up in Kansas City and maintains a home locally; he met Mejia in 2018, and in 2021 the couple bought a coffee farm in the Andes Mountains of Huila, in southwestern Colombia — beginning at roughly 50 acres and later expanding to about 60.12
What sets the café apart is genuine farm-to-cup vertical integration: the beans poured in Westport are grown, processed, and roasted from the couple’s own land in Huila, then shipped to Kansas City on a roughly three-month rolling supply, with batches typically selling out before the next arrives.1 That makes Janssen’s House one of the very few — by the founders’ account, perhaps the only — shops in the metro serving coffee its owners grew themselves.2
The ~2,000-square-foot space carries 16-foot ceilings, exposed brick, and lounge seating in the back. The bar runs a Dalla Corte espresso machine, and the shop’s identity is education-forward, with planned tastings and cupping classes built around its single-origin Colombian lot.12 Before the storefront opened, the coffee was sold online and at the Overland Park Farmers’ Market.1
Tier classification
Tier 1 — KC-native, founder-led, vertically integrated independent. (Provisional.)
Tier 1 in KS.City doctrine measures pride and dedication to a business owner’s KC roots, not a mechanical checklist. Janssen’s House makes a strong case on both counts. Co-owner Brett Janssen is a Kansas City native who grew up here and keeps a home in the city — the roots criterion is met and sourced, not assumed.1 On dedication, the operation is about as founder-committed as a coffee business gets: the owners don’t merely buy and resell beans, they own and work the farm those beans come from, then roast and serve them under one roof. That farm-to-cup vertical integration is rare anywhere in the U.S. and, by the founders’ account, unmatched locally — exactly the kind of identity-forward, craft-deep independent the Registry’s quality-first bar for coffee is meant to honor.
Marked provisional pending owner verification and longer operating tenure (open only since October 2025). The KC-native roots fact is sourced to KCUR; if a second confirmation of Janssen’s specific hometown ward/municipality is wanted for the record, flag . Note also a name nuance: the owner is reported as **Brett Janssen** (with Mejia his fiancée), so "Janssen + Genisis Mejia" describes a couple, not a shared surname if a single canonical owner-name spelling is required.

Janssen’s House runs the rarest possible menu premise — “We sell only the coffee we grow.” Every cup and every bag traces to the owners’ family farm in Huila, Colombia; the lineup is organized by processing method (natural, honey, washed) of that single estate’s lots rather than by a multi-origin offering list.3
Single-origin Colombian beans (retail / whole bean)
Sold in-store, online, and historically at the Overland Park Farmers’ Market.1 Current store listing:4
- Natural Process — single-origin Colombian, family farm (Huila) — $35.00 · in stock4
- Red Honey — single-origin Colombian, honey process — $35.00 · in stock4
- Yellow Honey Colombian — honey process — price not listed; out of stock at check “4
- Colombia Washed Full City — washed, fuller roast — price not listed; out of stock at check “4
Press has additionally named a Castillo Washed City Roast and Yellow Honey among the farm’s rotating lots.5
Café drinks (espresso bar)
The storefront serves prepared drinks pulled on a five-figure Dalla Corte espresso machine, built on the same single-origin Colombian beans. Press describes the drink menu as deliberately “relatively simple,” carrying only a few syrups to meet customer demand rather than a broad flavored-latte program.5 Standard espresso-bar drinks (espresso, latte, cappuccino, cold brew, pour-over) are consistent with the equipment and concept, but no per-drink café price list is published on the official site, joe.coffee ordering listing, Instagram, or Google Business as of 2026-06-23. “ — in-café drink menu and prices unverified; do not publish drink prices until confirmed via an on-site menu photo, the joe.coffee order page, or owner confirmation.65
Programming
- Tastings + cupping classes built around the single-origin Colombian lot (education-forward concept).12
Price-tier honesty: retail bean prices verified High ($35/bag, official store). Café drink prices are unverified — flagged, not estimated. A $35 single-estate bag and a five-figure Dalla Corte bar place the program at the premium/specialty end of the KC market, but a verified drink-by-drink tier cannot be assigned without a sourced café menu.
