John’s Java and Jazz is a Black-owned coffee bar, cocktail bar and live-jazz room at 2003 N 5th St in downtown Kansas City, Kansas. It keeps evening hours only — Thursday through Saturday from 6pm, closed Sunday through Wednesday — which makes it a jazz parlour that serves coffee rather than a coffee shop that books music. In September 2026 it is one of eleven Black-owned KCK restaurants in the city’s first Black Restaurant Week. It has no working website: the domain johnsjavajazz.com is registered and resolves, but serves HTTP 404, and both official tourism listings for the business render no business information at all.

Description

John’s Java and Jazz runs on an evening schedule that tells you what it is. It is closed Sunday through Wednesday and opens at 6pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday, to 11pm on the Thursday and to midnight on the weekend.1 A coffee shop does not keep those hours; a music room does.

Its directory categorisation carries the same doubled identity — Coffee & Tea, Cocktail Bar and American (New) at once — and the business is listed on EatOkra, the national directory of Black-owned restaurants.1 It appears in KCUR’s roster of the eleven Black-owned Kansas City, Kansas restaurants taking part in the city’s first Black Restaurant Week in September 2026.2

Beyond that, the documentary record is thin, and this page does not pad it. What a visitor would want to know — who runs it, when it opened, what is on the menu and at what price, and who plays there — is not established by any source read this pass. Those gaps are itemised below rather than filled by inference.

The Registry carries several fellow participants from the same 2026 roster: Ms. R’s Cafe on Quindaro, Holy Smoke BBQ on Leavenworth Road, and Jones Bar-B-Q on Kaw Drive.

Ownership and history

Not established. No owner name, founding date, or ownership history was located in any source read this pass. The business name implies a proprietor named John; that is an inference and is not recorded as a fact here.

Legal entity name and Kansas Secretary of State registration were not searched this pass.

This section exists as a stub deliberately. The vault’s standard is that a missing owner is marked missing, not guessed at — and the fastest route to closing it is not more desk research but the phone number above.
