J’s BBQ (J’s BBQ Smokehouse & Catering) is a family-owned Olathe pit room at 1375 W Old 56 Hwy, opened 2025 by Josh Deal and his father Jason in the former Johnny’s BBQ space. Deal had been Johnny’s general manager and vice president. The line is hickory, pit-to-table, sauce off the meat, sell-out-when-gone. Tier 1 independent (in-metro owners; successor to a 1977 Johnny White lineage, not a franchise).1234

Description

J’s presents itself as old-school pit-to-table: limited daily smoke, sliced or chopped to order, sauce not on the meat, “when it’s gone it’s gone.” The official origin story is explicit about the building — it was the second Johnny’s BBQ, opened 2001 by Eric White, son of Johnny White, who started in Merriam in 1977. Josh and Jason Deal took the room to keep a hickory smokehouse on Old 56. Signatures called out first-party include brisket, ribs, sausage, pulled pork, and marshmallow burnt ends the brand claims as “voted best in the city” (that award line is owner-asserted — not independently pinned this pass).12

Johnson County Post (Apr 8, 2025) dated the public open and listed hours then as Tue–Sat 10am–8pm, Sun 11am–7pm. Yelp’s August 2026 header still shows Monday closed; treat hours as press-era unless re-pulled from a first-party hours block.4

Ownership and history

Johnny White opened Johnny’s Bar-B-Q in Merriam in 1977; the Mission room later closed (2020). The Olathe Johnny’s (2001, Eric White) is the room J’s occupies. The Kansas City Star (Mar 12, 2025) reported Josh Deal, former GM and vice president of Johnny’s, taking the lease and reopening as J’s BBQ — customers still walking in expecting Johnny’s. First-party names Josh and dad Jason as founders; catering and private parties are on the same site. SpotOn online ordering is live.312
