Justrite Rubber Stamp & Seal has made marking devices in the Kansas City area since 1959 — rubber stamps, self-inking and pre-inked stamps, daters, notary and professional embossing seals, engraved plates, nameplates, badges and custom signs. In 2005 it bought Liepsner & Co., a Kansas City marking-device house whose lineage ran back more than a century, and traded from Liepsner’s 1701 Locust Street plant until liquidating the shop’s equipment in August 2019. The business continues to trade under Allen Glass from an Overland Park address. This is one of the last survivors of a trade that once had a shop in every downtown.

Description

Justrite Rubber Stamp & Seal works in one of the least documented trades in the metro. Marking devices — rubber stamps, daters, embossers, engraved plates, badges and stencils — were once a standard downtown business supplied by dozens of small shops; almost none of those shops survive, and none of them get written about.

The company’s own catalogue describes the range: traditional rubber stamps, pre-inked and self-inking stamps, daters, custom stencils with logos, rotary and laser engraved plates, and embossers in both hand-held and desk formats — the latter being the notary, architect, engineer and corporate seals that carry legal weight. It also runs a sign shop producing one-off and quantity signs, vehicle magnets and lettering, decals, aluminium reflective parking signs, and plastic and reverse-adhesive signs, all laminated for indoor and outdoor life. Its product categories include awards and recognition plaques, nameplates, badges, logos and band stamps.1

The business dates itself to 1959.1 Its more interesting inheritance is Liepsner & Co., a Kansas City marking-device house that Justrite purchased in November 2005 and whose name it then carried alongside its own; the combined operation traded from Liepsner’s plant at 1701 Locust Street.234 The Locust Street plant liquidated its shop equipment, tools, antiques and office contents at auction on 19 August 2019, described in the sale notice as the close of “100+ years of business in Kansas City.”2

The company did not disappear with the plant. Its e-commerce operation remains live and its contact page gives an Overland Park address on College Boulevard, a phone and fax, published business hours, and a named contact, Allen Glass.15 Whether it still manufactures or now works as a specifier and finisher is not documented and is flagged below.

History

Justrite Rubber Stamp & Seal has supplied marking devices since 1959.1

Its acquired half is older. Liepsner & Co. was a Kansas City marking-device manufacturer — police badges, steel stamps, embossed plates, dies, stencils and rubber stamps.3 Justrite purchased Liepsner in November 2005 and thereafter operated as Justrite & Liepsner from Liepsner’s plant at 1701 Locust Street in Kansas City, Missouri, on the eastern edge of the Crossroads.234 Federal contractor records list the company at that Locust Street address under the combined name.4

On 19 August 2019 the Locust Street operation was liquidated at auction — “After 100+ years of business in Kansas City, Justrite & Liepsner must close their doors and liquidate all shop equipment and tools, antiques and collectibles, office furniture and equipment,” including antique and modern advertising signage.2 The century-plus figure refers to the Liepsner lineage, not to Justrite’s own 1959 start.

The name did not go with the equipment. Justrite Rubber Stamp & Seal Co. continues to trade, taking orders through its catalogue site and reachable at an Overland Park address with published hours.15 A separate federal-contractor record places the company in a Kansas City, MO 64116 zip — North Kansas City — which may reflect an intermediate address between the Locust Street closure and Overland Park, or simply a stale record.6
