Description

Kabuki Sushi is one of the oldest family-run Japanese sushi restaurants in Kansas City — founded in 1985 at Crown Center, where it operated for 28 years before closing in 2014. Ted Hamada resurrected the restaurant in Brookside in January 2017, reopening at 333 W Meyer Blvd with co-founder Salvador Cerritos. The Kansas City Business Journal covered the reopening; The Pitch’s 2014 coverage documented the Crown Center closure with the restaurant’s legacy intact. In its own words: “Established in 1985, we’re one of the oldest family run Sushi restaurants in Kansas City.” The Brookside location operates dinner-only, maintaining the intimate format of the original. Forty years of Kansas City sushi heritage — spanning Crown Center and Brookside, closing and returning — makes Kabuki one of the metro’s most tenured independent Japanese concepts.

Tier classification

Tier pending — Ted Hamada origin. The Hamada surname and family-run Japanese sushi concept strongly imply Japanese or Japanese-American background. The Kansas City Business Journal’s 2017 reopening article names Ted Hamada as the owner but does not include a biographical profile or hometown. If Hamada is Japanese-American born or raised in Kansas City, Tier 1; if he immigrated to KC from Japan, Tier 2. With 40+ years of KC operation and a return after closure, the dedication to Kansas City is clear regardless of tier. “ — check kabukisushikc.com for an “About” page, or contact the restaurant directly.
