KC.Seamstress is a one-woman alterations and tailoring shop at 11812 Quivira Road in southern Overland Park, opened in 2023 by Sofiya Borovytska, who was twenty at the time. She learned the trade at her mother’s tailor shop in Waldo, built a following as an Instagram account before she had a storefront, and does all the work herself — wedding-dress reconstruction, vintage restoration, leather and denim repair.

Description

KC.Seamstress is an alterations and tailoring shop in a strip of storefronts on Quivira Road in southern Overland Park. It is a one-woman operation: Sofiya Borovytska takes the work in and does the work, without a bench of employees behind her.1

The shop’s range runs wider than the ordinary hem-and-take-in trade. Its stated speciality is vintage, second-hand and reworked clothing — combining heirloom dresses into new garments, reconstructing wedding dresses, restoring vintage pieces, and repairing leather jackets and denim.12 The business operates by appointment, and describes the work as collaborative: the client brings the idea and the shop executes it.2

Borovytska began sewing as a teenager after taking fashion courses at school, initially intending to become a designer, and worked in her mother’s Kansas City tailor shop before opening her own. She started the @kc.seamstress Instagram account in 2021 and by her own account it is where most of her clientele comes from — an unusual origin story for this trade, in which a shop’s book is normally built entirely on foot traffic and referral.13

Her mother, Alla Borovytska, owns Alla’s Tailor & Alterations in waldo, which had been operating more than a decade as of 2023.1 The Overland Park shop opened under the combined name “Alla’s Tailor and KC Seamstress” and now trades chiefly as KC.Seamstress; the two businesses are related by family but are separate concerns.

History

Sofiya Borovytska learned to sew in her teens and worked at her mother’s tailor shop in Kansas City before starting out on her own. She launched the @kc.seamstress Instagram account in 2021, and in 2023 — aged twenty — opened her first storefront at 11812 Quivira Road in southern Overland Park, her first location in Johnson County.1

The shop was profiled by the Johnson County Post in December 2023, shortly after opening.1 Since then it has taken on its own domain and a separate Facebook presence, and the posted hours have shifted from a Monday-open to a Tuesday-through-Saturday, appointment-based schedule.23
