Description

KC Soda Co. is a craft-soda bottle shop at 421 Main Street inside Kansas City’s historic City Market, in the River Market — sited between Minsky’s Pizza and Pigwich. The business claims access to more than 1,300 varieties of soda, spanning traditional American root beers and cream sodas through hard-to-find imports. Customers buy single bottles or assemble custom six-packs and twelve-packs; the shop will chill bottles in store.

Owner Lucas Thompson opened the original shop, Mass Street Soda, at 1103 Massachusetts Street in Lawrence, Kansas in 2014, inspired by craft soda stores he had encountered in California and Oklahoma. KC Soda Co. followed — first at the Legends Outlets in Kansas City, Kansas, then relocating to the City Market, where Flatland covered the shop in September 2017 with roughly 700 varieties on the shelf. Thompson was also a co-founder of the Breakout KC escape rooms in the River Market and operates Fountain City Scoops & Floats, another City Market tenant.

Beyond retail, KC Soda Co. rents root beer kegs in 1/6- and 1/4-barrel sizes for events — the venue’s listing describes it as the only metro retailer offering the service — and runs a wholesale line serving restaurants and shops across Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka and surrounding towns, plus direct-to-consumer shipping nationwide.

Menu

menu_status: na

Bottle shop, not a soda fountain. Walked the operator’s own domain on 2026-08-26: home / /main, /craft, /root-beer-kegs, /wholesale, /roots. Site nav is Home, Craft, Social, Contact, Root Beer Kegs, Wholesale, plus an “Online Store” link that leaves the domain for kcsodaco.square.site. Home and /craft describe “selling by the bottle at our retail location,” wholesale distribution, and nationwide shipping. No poured-drink, fountain, float-service, or café menu on any own-domain page.¹²³

Own-domain cart: none. Bottle shelf prices are not published on kcsoda.com. The operator’s Square storefront (https://kcsodaco.square.site/) is a JS-rendered catalog of packaged SKUs — sitemap lists 3,679 /product/ URLs (bottles, cans, kegs, snacks, souvenir glasses); sample product pages and the Square home carry no recoverable prices in static HTML. Per the own-domain-cart rule this is not sampled as partial, and the 1,300+ bottle catalog is not transcribed.⁴

Keg rental (takeaway event rental, not in-shop pouring) — first-party prices on /root-beer-kegs. “12-ounce pours” on that page is keg-yield math, not a shop pour list:²

• 1/6 barrel (5.16 gal / 55 × 12-oz pours) — $75 + $50 refundable keg deposit
• 1/4 barrel (7.75 gal / 83 × 12-oz pours) — $109 + $50 refundable keg deposit
• Sankey tap rental — $10 + $50 refundable deposit

Confirmed offerings still without bottle shelf prices:

• Individual craft soda bottles — access to more than 1,300 varieties¹⁵
• Build-your-own six-packs and twelve-packs⁵
• In-store bottle chilling⁵
• Wholesale distribution (Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka and surrounding areas)¹⁵³
• Nationwide shipping via the online store¹⁵
