King G is the East Crossroads’ clearest example of a dual-nature venue: a classic-style delicatessen by day — deli sandwiches, paninis, subs, charcuterie — and one of the neighborhood’s most active cocktail bars by night, with a horseshoe bar, garage-door glass walls, and a downstairs “Pit Bar.”12 It occupies the northeast corner of 18th & Locust in a building that suffered a partial structural collapse in October 2018, delaying opening by roughly three years.34

Description

King G is a two-concept venue sharing one kitchen: a delicatessen serving classic deli sandwiches (Chopped Hero, Italian, corned beef, pastrami on rye, Taylor ham egg and cheese, tuna, roast pork, chicken parm) alongside charcuterie, deviled-egg potato salad, and pasta salad,5 and a cocktail bar with a scratch-made juice/tonic/soda program, craft beer, and natural wine.16 The venue is named for King Gambrinus, a folkloric patron of beer and brewing.3 Design features a large horseshoe bar, two glass garage doors, floor-to-ceiling windows with downtown skyline views, and a basement bar (“the Pit Bar”) that holds 25–35 people.73

Ownership and history

Owner Eric Flanagan signed the King G lease in September 2018.4 Shortly after, the building’s corner partially collapsed, and the basement later flooded, delaying construction roughly three years through COVID-19.34 King G opened in summer 2021 — reporting varies between July and September 2021 for the precise opening date.89

Flanagan has roughly 15 years in Kansas City hospitality, including ownership/operator roles at OFFKEY and Bridger’s Bottle Shop, and general-manager roles at Westport Ale House, 99 Hops House, McFadden’s Pub, and Leinenkugel’s; he is also a certified cicerone and beer judge and has worked with Sandhills Brewing Company in Mission, Kansas.4 Flanagan also operates Jim’s Alley Bar in the same building.10 The deli menu draws on Flanagan’s childhood in Port Jefferson, New York.4 King G’s chef, Howard Hanna, previously cooked at The Rieger and Ça Va.23

: Flanagan’s own KC roots (born/raised, or arrival date) are not established from press coverage found — only his ~15-year local hospitality tenure. If tenure is confirmed at 20+ years, or if born-and-raised-KC-metro status can be sourced, this may move to Tier 1. As-is, the multi-venue operator profile (King G + Jim’s Alley Bar + OFFKEY/Bridger’s Bottle Shop history) plus unconfirmed-but-sub-20-year local tenure keeps this at Tier 2.
