L.A. True Value Hardware

This profile is in active compilation — some details are awaiting a cited source.

L.A. True Value Hardware is a family-owned neighborhood hardware store at 631 Kansas Avenue in Armourdale, Kansas City, Kansas — one of the few full-line hardware counters left serving Wyandotte County’s industrial river bottoms and the surrounding houses. It is owned by Art and LaVerta Eickhoff, whose initials give the store its name, and managed by their daughter and granddaughter. The store carries the True Value banner as an independently owned member retailer, and trades in building materials, tools, paint, plumbing and electrical parts, and lawn and garden supply.

Description

L.A. True Value Hardware stands on Kansas Avenue in Armourdale, the low-lying Kansas City, Kansas neighborhood between the Kansas River and the rail yards that has been industrial and residential in equal measure for a century. The store is a general hardware counter: building materials, tools, paint, plumbing and electrical parts, lawn and garden supply.¹

Its distinguishing character in local accounts is the old-fashioned neighborhood-store manner — customers describe a stylish, old-fashioned store with a hometown feel, staff who will explain the easy way to make a repair rather than simply ring up a part, and stock that includes items the warehouse retailers no longer bother with.¹² One neighbor’s account of shopping there for more than 35 years, and of the drive being worth it, indicates a customer base that reaches well beyond Armourdale.¹

The store is small: roughly five employees at the single location, on the estimate of a business-data aggregator.³ It carries the True Value banner. True Value is a hardware wholesaler and banner program whose retailers are independently owned businesses — the name on the sign is a supply relationship, not a corporate parent.⁴

History

The store takes its name from the initials of its owners, LaVerta and Art Eickhoff, and has passed into day-to-day management by the family’s second and third generations: daughter Shelly Eickhoff and granddaughter Cali Alexander.² A business-data aggregator gives a 1985 founding date, which is not corroborated by any first-party or press source located in this pass and sits awkwardly against customer accounts of a 35-plus-year shopping relationship; the founding date should be treated as open.³¹

Armourdale’s hardware trade once served a dense industrial workforce — packing plants, rail shops, and the soap and chemical works along the river. Most of that retail is gone. L.A. True Value is among the last general hardware counters operating in the neighborhood, and it is currently trading, with directory and review records current through mid-2026.¹⁵⁶
