Description
Level One Game Shop is an independent tabletop game store at 400 Grand Boulevard, Suite 420, inside Kansas City’s City Market in the River Market. The shop stocks strategy and role-playing board games, trading card games (Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Star Wars Unlimited), Warhammer and other miniatures with painting supplies, dice and card sleeves and playmats and deck boxes, jigsaw puzzles, and gaming merchandise. It operates under the entity name The Kansas City Board Game Company, LLC.
The shop’s distinguishing feature is that it is as much a room as a retailer: a dedicated play space lets customers try games before buying, staff give demonstrations and teach complex titles, and a demo shelf is maintained through publisher demo programs. Level One runs a continuous event calendar — tournaments, organized play nights, new-release events and RPG nights. A dated 2017 post by co-owner Shawn Davison lists a representative week of that programming: Tuesday Modern Magic: The Gathering ($5 entry), a Tabletop RPG Night for new and experienced players, a Star Wars Destiny league night ($10 entry with weekly packs), and an off-site Board Game Tavern collaboration at the Alamo Drafthouse on Main Street.
The City Market’s central lot gives two hours of free parking, which the shop notes for customers staying to play; surrounding lots run $2–$5 depending on lot and day.

None — tabletop retail and events only. Walked the operator’s own site on 2026-08-26: home, About Level One, Event Calendar, In Store Events, and Contact. Storefront navigation is Board Games, Role-Playing, Trading Cards, Supplies, Culture (apparel / pins / puzzles), Miniatures, About, and Event Calendar — games, accessories, and merch. No café, bar, concessions stand, or food/drink SKU on those pages.123
About mentions off-site meetups “at great bars and restaurants around town”; that is not in-store food service.1 The own-domain cart prices games, not food; those retail prices are not transcribed here.
Event entry fees. Calendar and In Store Events publish no current priced event list — In Store Events points players to Facebook Events and Discord.23 The only first-party event prices on file remain the 2017 owner-authored figures and are not treated as current:
- Tuesday Modern Magic: The Gathering — $5 entry (October 2017)4
- Star Wars Destiny League — $10 entry (October 2017)4
Parking, first-party (current as of the About page, re-checked 2026-08-26):
- City Market central lot — free for two hours; surrounding lots $2–$5 depending on lot and day of week1
