Monarch Books & Gifts is Overland Park’s first independent bookstore and gift shop, opened by Christin Young in 2019 — first under the name Green Door Book Store & Gift Shoppe, in a space she had to leave over a zoning misunderstanding, then in the Stanley Station center on West 151st Street from March 2020, which is to say it relocated into the first month of the pandemic and survived it. Young’s stated model was a New England-style bookshop: a book wall, a children’s reading nook with bean bags, a literary coffee menu, and three standing book clubs.

Description

Monarch Books & Gifts is an independent bookstore and gift shop in south Overland Park, owned by Christin Young and trading since 2019.12 Visit Overland Park, the city’s visitor bureau, describes it as “Overland Park’s first independent bookstore and gift shop.”1

The store’s format is a bookshop-plus rather than a bookshop alone. Alongside a curated selection across genres it carries a substantial gift range — sufficiently so that it has been voted Best of KC “Best Place to Buy a Gift” — and serves coffee from behind the counter on a literary-themed menu.13 The interior is built for staying: a decorative book wall, a warm seating area, and a children’s reading nook with bean bags.3 Young has described the design intent as recreating a New England-style bookstore in Kansas.3

The programming is the part that distinguishes it from a gift shop with shelves. Monarch runs three regular book clubs, hosts author signings, works with schools and libraries, and stages “grown-up book fair” pop-ups at other local businesses with proceeds directed to school districts.23

Young’s own account of the business is unambiguously personal: “This is my heart and soul. Just people coming in and talking books, and hearing the laughter through the store — that really is my favorite part.”2 The store’s stated pitch to a customer is “the place to come for a happy vibe, a good book, some time away from the bustling world, a great cup of coffee, and a sense of humor.”3

History

Christin Young began stocking shelves in 2019, opening under the name Green Door Book Store & Gift Shoppe in a smaller space off 151st Street and Quivira Road.2 After roughly a year there she was forced to give the space up over a misunderstanding about how the unit was zoned — a bureaucratic rather than a commercial failure, and one worth recording precisely because the store survived it.2

She reopened in the current, larger space in the Stanley Station center on West 151st Street in March 2020.2 That timing put the relocation directly into the first weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns. The business came through both the zoning loss and the pandemic, and the store rebranded to Monarch Books & Gifts in 2022.2

By its fifth anniversary in March 2024 the Johnson County Post was reporting meaningful growth and an established community programme of book clubs, signings and off-site book fairs.2 As of 2026 the store remains in the same location and is listed as trading by the city’s visitor bureau and by peer metro bookstore directories.14
