Old School Horns is a brass and woodwind repair bench and instrument shop in Overland Park, run by three career technicians who between them have repaired, played, and taught band instruments for a combined 55 years.
Description
Old School Horns is a band instrument repair shop at 7904 W 96th Street in Overland Park, operating under the tagline “Building relationships on quality repair and customer service.”1 The shop’s three technicians — Nelson Moore, Eric Rempe, and Dirk Colgrove — have, by the shop’s own accounting, a combined 55 years of experience professionally repairing, playing, and teaching musical instruments.1
Repair is the core of the business and the service list is unusually granular for a shop this size, running from brass deep cleans (full disassembly and ultrasonic cleaning in an acidic solution to strip calcium and scale, with felts, corks, and springs replaced on reassembly) through dent and solder work, crushed-bell and valve rebuilds, and trombone slide overhauls, to the full woodwind ladder of play-condition work, clean-oil-and-adjust, repad, and mechanical overhaul.2 Ergonomic and intonation modifications are taken case by case after inspection.2
Alongside the bench, the shop rents student instruments through Rent My Instrument, and sells instruments, mouthpieces, and accessories for brass, woodwind, and percussion through an online store.1
An unusual line of business is the shop’s teaching bench — guided hands-on instrument-repair instruction aimed at band directors and future music educators, but open to anyone; students bring the instrument they want to work on and the technicians walk them through the repair.2 That reflects the staff’s teaching backgrounds: all three came to the shop from education or education-facing roles in the music trade.3
Old School Horns appears on the Shawnee Mission School District’s recommended sales, rental, and repair vendor list for performing arts families.4
Ownership and history
Nelson Moore is listed as Owner and Woodwind Specialist of Old School Horns in the member directory of the National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians, a record last updated 5 July 2026.5 Whether Rempe and Colgrove hold ownership stakes alongside Moore is “.
The shop’s founding year is “. No first-party or press statement of an opening date could be located; the shop’s own site carries no “established” line and it has not been the subject of local business coverage found in this research. The staff biographies place all three principals at BAC Musical Instruments and Rent My Instrument in Kansas City immediately beforehand, with Colgrove’s tenure there running to 2024, which is suggestive but not a citable founding date.3
The three technicians’ backgrounds are documented on the shop’s own team page.3 Moore, a Tennessee native, took bachelor’s and master’s degrees in saxophone performance at Middle Tennessee State University, began repairing instruments as the MTSU School of Music’s technician in 2011, founded Moore Music Repair in Murfreesboro in 2014, and moved to Kansas City in 2019 as woodwind specialist and repair shop manager for BAC Musical Instruments and Rent My Instrument. Rempe, from Nebraska, graduated from the University of Nebraska–Kearney in 2013, interned with Jeff Stelling of Stelling Brass and Winds, completed the instrument repair program at Minnesota State Southeast in Red Wing in 2016, and became head brass technician at BAC. Colgrove took a music education degree from Doane University in 1991, directed band and choir at Nemaha Valley Schools in Seneca, Kansas for 19 years, taught band at St. Joseph Catholic School in Shawnee from 2013 to 2024, and served as project manager at Rent My Instrument from 2021 to 2024.3
