Phillips Family Pharmacy is an independent, woman-owned community pharmacy at 2101 NW Platte Road in Riverside, Missouri, opened in 2013 by pharmacist Josie D. Phillips, Pharm.D. Three years in it added a compounding lab, and it has since built out lines a chain counter does not carry: clinical pharmacogenomics testing, functional-medicine consulting, veterinary compounding, multi-dose pill packaging, and long-term-care service, alongside ordinary dispensing for Riverside, North Kansas City, Parkville, and the Northland.

Description

Phillips Family Pharmacy is an independent community pharmacy in Riverside, Missouri, on the Platte County side of the Northland. Its own site states it has served Riverside, North Kansas City, Parkville, and Kansas City since 2013 and describes itself as “family owned and family focused.”1 The federal NPI registry records the legal entity as Phillips Family Pharmacy, LLC, at 2101 NW Platte Road, with Josie D. Phillips, Pharm.D., listed as pharmacist/owner and authorized official, under a community/retail pharmacy taxonomy and Missouri licence 2013005206.2

What separates the pharmacy from a standard retail counter is the clinical build-out layered on top of dispensing. A compounding lab was added roughly three years after opening.3 A clinical pharmacogenomics (PGx) program is staffed by a pharmacist certified and trained in clinical pharmacogenomics at the Mayo Clinic, offering medication-response testing.3 The owner practises functional medicine, having begun that training in 2018 and graduated from the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine in autumn 2020 with an expanded fellowship in advanced endocrinology.34 Compounding extends to veterinary patients as well as human ones.3

The staff roster on the pharmacy’s own site is unusually detailed for a small independent — pharmacists, a dedicated compounding pharmacist, a PGx pharmacist, and technicians are each named with their training and their neighbourhoods.3 The pharmacy states its staff has more than 25 years of combined experience and that it has been “Voted Best of KC Multiple Times” in The Pitch.3

History

Josie Phillips opened Phillips Family Pharmacy in Riverside in 2013, in her own account on the pharmacy’s staff page: “I opened Phillips Family Pharmacy in 2013. After 3 short years of being open we expanded and opened a compounding lab to meet the different needs of our patients.”3 She is a graduate of the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Pharmacy and is certified in dosing bio-identical hormones through the Professional Compounding Centers of America’s C4 program.4

In 2018 she began training as a functional-medicine practitioner, and in the autumn of 2020 graduated from the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine with an expanded fellowship in advanced endocrinology.34 The pharmacogenomics program followed, staffed by a pharmacist trained at the Mayo Clinic.3 Staff tenure at the store runs long for the trade — one technician has been with the pharmacy since 2016, and a compounding pharmacist on staff worked there as an intern while completing her UMKC pharmacy degree before returning as a pharmacist.3
