Planet Queen Records & Vintage is an independent record store and vintage boutique on Independence Square, opened February 2, 2024 by owner Kimmie Queen and named after the T. Rex song “Planet Queen.”¹²

Description

Planet Queen Records & Vintage occupies a former salon space at 209 W Maple Ave, a block off Independence Square, and is described by its owner as the only record store filling that market on the Square. The shop stocks used records, cassettes, CDs, 8-tracks, VHS, DVDs, and laserdiscs alongside new local-artist media, used band and concert t-shirts, vintage clothing, buttons, stickers, sunglasses, jewelry, magazines, and books. The stated intent is a kitschy, curated environment that “feel[s] like a blast from the past, not just records,” with a dedicated section for local artists.¹²

Owner background

Kimmie Queen is a vinyl DJ who also works at Seventh Heaven on Troost in Kansas City, and curates the store’s inventory by continually hunting records at good prices. The shop opened February 2, 2024.¹
