Planters Seed & Spice Co. is a century-old seed, garden-supply, and bulk-spice store at 513 Walnut Street in the City Market, in the River Market. German immigrant Henry Wertheim took over a Walnut Street commission house in 1924, rebranded it Planters Seed Company, and moved it to 513 Walnut — a building Thomas Swope put up in 1880 — in 1927. It has traded from that address for a century, expanding through the walls into neighbouring storefronts, and still runs on its original wood floors, seed drawers, and scales. Sells garden and farm seed in bulk, lawn and garden supplies, hardware, and more than 300 varieties of spice.
Description
Planters Seed & Spice Co. is a seed, garden-supply, and bulk-spice merchant at 513 Walnut Street, on the block of original nineteenth-century row buildings facing the City Market in Kansas City’s River Market. It is among the oldest continuously operating retail businesses in the district.
The company traces to Henry Wertheim, born in Lambsheim, Germany in 1886, who emigrated to the United States in 1905 and worked his way to Independence as a clerk for the S. Bryson Ayers Flower and Seed Company. Ayers opened a second location at 503 Walnut Street in 1920, across from the market, and made Wertheim its manager. In 1924 the store moved down the block to 523 Walnut — the former premises of a competitor, the William F. Helm Commission Company — and shortly afterward the owners sold out to Wertheim, who rebranded it the Planters Seed Company. Short of stock and short of capital, he is said to have stuffed burlap sacks with paper to make the shelves look full. In 1927 he moved again, to the larger building at 513 Walnut where the store still trades. That building had been put up in 1880 by real-estate magnate and philanthropist Thomas Swope, and had housed a saloon, a restaurant, and an oyster market, with rooming-house floors above.1
Planters began as a commission house: it processed and sold seed brought in by area farmers and shared the proceeds. Wertheim’s staff, led by his son-in-law and general manager Clifton Hall, cleaned the bulk of the raw seed on site, and the store built a reputation for filling any order, from an ounce to a truckload. As Kansas City’s suburbs grew, the customer base inverted — from roughly ninety percent farmers in the 1920s to roughly ninety percent suburban gardeners by mid-century — and the stock followed, adding fertilisers, pesticides, tools, pots, and eventually a hardware section. Spices, always carried in small quantity for farmers who lived too far from a grocer to shop often, expanded on customer demand to more than 300 varieties, and are now as much a draw as the seed. To make room, Planters took over adjoining storefronts and cut openings through the party walls.12
Wertheim sold the business in 1980 and retired at the age of 94. The buyers, by their own account, knew little about the seed trade but were determined to keep Planters a family-run company; the store has continued under that footing.1 “ — no first-party or press source consulted for this draft names the current owners.
The interior is largely unaltered: original wood plank floors, the wall of wooden seed drawers, the scales used to weigh seed by the ounce, and an antique cash register kept on display. The store sits a few doors from City Market Coffee Roasters and Murmuration, and trades alongside the market’s weekend produce vendors.
