Description
Platte Woods Animal Hospital is a full-service small-animal practice at 5901 NW 72nd Street in the Northland, north of the river in Platte County. It has operated since 1971 and treats “many types of animals including but not limited to cats, dogs, rabbits, and guinea pigs.”1
The hospital’s defining feature is its family structure. Ron Armstrong, DVM bought the practice in 1993; his son Tyler Armstrong, DVM joined as an associate veterinarian in May 2015 and became medical director in 2020.12 The hospital states the point directly: “We are exceptionally proud to be a family-run business that thinks of all our staff and clients as extended family.”1
It is open six days a week and carries more clinical capability than a strictly appointment-hours general practice. It takes emergency cases during business hours and provides overnight hospitalization to patients who need it, and its medical work extends into orthopedics, dentistry and reproductive medicine alongside general wellness.1 Breeding services are a distinct listed service line, which is comparatively unusual among metro small-animal hospitals.1
Four veterinarians practise there, with a mix of backgrounds. Dr. Richard Brus, who joined in 2019, began his career at a southwest Iowa practice where he treated buffalo, elk, llamas and livestock alongside dogs and cats; his interests are now endocrinology and dermatology. Dr. Riley Newson holds a Human-Animal Bond Certification, practises Fear Free medicine, and lists veterinary hospice and end-of-life care, animal behavior, clinical pathology and veterinary social work among her professional interests.2
The practice also runs a long internal promotion track worth noting: its practice manager, Courtney, started at the hospital as a kennel attendant in 2019, went through the Maple Woods veterinary technology programme, qualified as a registered veterinary technician in 2021, and stepped into the practice-manager role at the start of 2023.2
