Process One is a full-service film and digital photo lab on 95th Street in Overland Park, and its own tagline is the whole pitch: “A REAL photo lab, since 1984.” It runs C-41 colour, E-6 slide and black-and-white processing across 35mm, 110, 126, 120 medium format and 4x5 sheet film, prints on Fuji Frontier equipment, and does the archival work — scanning, restoration, colourisation, tape and 8mm/16mm movie film transfer — that outlives the film era itself. Forty-two years in, it is one of the few labs in the metro still processing slide film.

Description

Process One is an independent photo and digital imaging lab at 7105 West 95th Street in Overland Park, on the southwest corner of 95th and Metcalf.12 It has processed film since 1984 and describes itself as “a full service custom photo and digital imaging lab serving customers across the country” — the mail-in trade is not incidental, and the toll-free number is a relic of a business that has always taken work from outside its own metro.31

The reason the lab matters is the breadth of what it still runs. C-41 colour negative, E-6 slide, and black and white are all processed in house, across 35mm, 110, 126, 120 medium format and 4x5 sheet film.3 E-6 in particular is a diminishing capability — the number of labs anywhere still running slide chemistry is small, and 110 and 126 are formats most surviving labs abandoned decades ago. Disposable cameras are developed too, which is the film-revival trade’s entry point.3

Printing runs on Fuji Frontier equipment, which the lab is explicit about: it began on Noritsu System II QSS processors, later moved to Fuji, and states of the Frontiers that “even today are the best that you can get.”1 That is a piece of the lab’s own technical self-account rather than a marketing line, and it dates the operation’s equipment lineage across two full generations of photofinishing hardware.

The second half of the business is archival. The lab scans film and prints, converts video tape and 8mm and 16mm movie film to digital, restores and colourises damaged photographs, recovers failed memory cards, and produces passport and visa photos, mounted prints and gallery prints.31 This is the work that keeps a photo lab viable after the drugstore minilab economy collapsed: the film volume returned with the revival, but the family-archive digitisation trade never went away.

History

Process One was started on 4 April 1984 and is a sole proprietorship owned by David Stoerman.2 Forty-two years of continuous operation makes it one of the longest-running photo labs in the metro and places its founding squarely in the peak of the one-hour photofinishing era.

The lab tells its own equipment history in place of a founding narrative: it began on Noritsu System II QSS processors and later upgraded to Fuji, running Fuji Frontier printers today.1 No founding story, no account of how the business survived the digital transition and the mass closure of retail photofinishing, and no succession information were located — the site carries no owner-facing about content beyond the equipment lineage, and no press coverage of the business was found in this pass.

That survival is the genuinely interesting unanswered question here. A lab that opened in 1984, watched the drugstore minilab economy that sustained its industry disappear entirely, and is still processing E-6 in 2026 has a story that no located source tells.
