Provis Coffee Roasters is a North Kansas City specialty roaster, founded 2025, selling roasted-to-order bags from proviscoffee.com while it finishes a two-story café and roastery at 2914 N. Buchanan St. in the Blume NKC development. First-party copy on 18 September 2026 still read Grand Opening Sept. 26 — the public café had not yet opened. Partners Ronni and Kristen Kurtz, Josh and Meagan Brown, and Jesse and Laura Worcester; lead roaster Randall Buchanan, hired from St. Louis. The name is Abel Magwitch’s alias in Dickens’s Great Expectations.
Description
Provis is already a mail-order and wholesale roaster. The About page and homepage, read 18 September 2026, sell single origins and house blends “roasted the week you order them,” a Reserve series, and merch, with a repeating banner: café + roastery, Grand Opening Sept. 26, 2914 Buchanan St.1 Contact hours for the business (not the café) were Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. CT, weekend closed, “orders still processing.”2
The literary theme is first-party, not a critic’s gloss. The name is Magwitch’s “Provis” alias in Great Expectations; the seal is a pointer named Turk (after Dickens’s mastiff) carrying a crown-flag the company reads as Kansas City — Royals, Monarchs, Hallmark — ringed with coffee cherries.1 Four stated values: Craftsmanship, Hospitality, Beauty, Stories.1
The Star (3 April 2026) had the partners aiming at a summer café opening in Blume NKC, with pour-overs, espresso, “really high-end specialty coffee” and “really fun, normal milk-based drinks,” every chair near an outlet, and an ambition to put Kansas City back into national competitions such as Brewers Cup.3 Sprudge’s May 2026 build-out (told by Buchanan) hoped for 1 August 2026 and described a ~6,000-square-foot two-story shop with a cupping lab, La Marzocco Strada, Poursteady, and an upstairs Slayer for slow-bar Saturdays.4 First-party in September had slipped to 26 September. Print the slip; do not pick a winner.
First-party retail examples on the About page the day of this draft (café drinks were not yet on a menu): Brazil Ipe Amarelo $10.50 / $19.00 bag sizes; “Beauty in the Ordinary” shirt $30.00.1 Those are bag/merch prices, not a café board.
Ownership and history
Six named partners in The Star: Ronni and Kristen Kurtz, Josh and Meagan Brown, Jesse and Laura Worcester.3 Ronni Kurtz is Josh Brown’s uncle, four years apart; Kurtz called them “more like brothers.”3 Jesse Worcester and Josh Brown “work in finance and are affiliated with Kansas City-based chain Hawaiian Bros, as well as a few other ventures.”3 That is an affiliation of two partners, not a statement that Hawaiian Bros owns Provis. No source this pass says otherwise. **** if a later filing shows a parent.
Brand launch: Ronni Kurtz’s Instagram, 16 February 2026, announced that he, Josh Brown and Jesse Worcester were starting the roaster and shop.5 The Star in April added the three spouses to the owner list.3 Mail-order: Kurtz posted 13 April 2026 that “you can finally order @proviscoffee.”6
Randall Buchanan is the first full-time employee and lead roaster, hired from the St. Louis scene, moving to Kansas City with a 1 March 2026 start per the company’s February Instagram; The Star in April found him already buying green, roasting and cupping.73
