Ramos Upholstery is a family upholstery shop at the corner of Central Avenue and North Tremont Street in Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, Kansas. Filiberto T. Ramos learned the trade in 1980 under a family friend and opened his own shop in 1990; he taught his sons, and the second generation carries the bench work today — furniture repair, reupholstery, refinishing, carpentry and custom builds, plus marine, auto and motorcycle seats. It is a bilingual shop on a bilingual corridor, and the kind of hand-trade business that is nearly absent from the Registry.
Description
Ramos Upholstery works out of a corner building at 556 Central Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, where Central Avenue meets North Tremont Street on the Strawberry Hill side of the corridor.12 It is a hand-trade shop: furniture is brought in, stripped, rebuilt and recovered, rather than sold off a floor.
The work spans residential and commercial furniture repair, reupholstery, refinishing and restoration, along with cushions and pillows, custom builds and modifications, and carpentry.13 The shop also does marine, automotive and motorcycle seat upholstery — a sideline that keeps a trade shop viable when household reupholstery demand is thin.3
The business is family-owned and operated and describes itself as having served the community for over thirty years, treating “every customer like family.”1 It is bilingual, with its own site offering a Spanish toggle — appropriate to Central Avenue, the Latino commercial corridor of Kansas City, Kansas.1 It is BBB-accredited, with accreditation dating to October 2017.3 The shop’s social channel of record is its Facebook page.4
Ramos sits in a part of the Registry’s geography that is close to empty. Strawberry Hill’s existing coverage runs to bakeries, a brewery and a coffee shop; the working trades that made the neighborhood — upholstery, repair, craft benches — are essentially unrecorded.

History
Filiberto T. Ramos entered the upholstery industry in 1980, working under the supervision of a family friend, Francisco Puga.1 After the birth of his third son in 1984 he decided to start his own business, and did so in 1990.1 Over the following years he taught his sons the trade; they later went out on their own and refined the skills they had learned.1 The family’s own account of the present generation is short and unadorned: skills honed over the years in carpentry, furniture repair, reupholstery and restoration.1
The Better Business Bureau records the business start date as 1 January 1992 and names Jorge Ramos as owner of Ramos Upholstery LLC, with thirty-four years in business and BBB accreditation since 12 October 2017.3 The two-year gap against the shop’s own 1990 founding date is unresolved and is recorded rather than smoothed; the LLC registration and the start of trading need not be the same event.
