REW Music is a family-owned band-and-orchestra shop in Lenexa and Olathe — instrument rentals, private lessons, sheet music, and an in-house repair bench — grown out of a certified repair technician’s home workshop in 1982.

REW Music serves the school band-and-orchestra trade in Johnson County from two storefronts: the original in Lenexa at 12842 W 87th Street Parkway, and a second in Olathe at 1080 W Santa Fe Street opened in August 2006.¹² Its business is the one that keeps a school music programme running — renting a beginner’s clarinet or violin to a fifth-grader, replacing the pads when it stops sealing, and selling the method book — rather than retail guitar sales.³¹

Meyer Music, which dates itself to 1966 and operates an Overland Park store, is the obvious comparator; the qualifier “home community” appears to be doing work in the claim.

REW Music appears on the Shawnee Mission School District’s published list of recommended sales, rental and repair vendors for performing arts, with both Johnson County addresses and phone numbers listed — an institutional third-party confirmation that the business is operating and is used by the district’s music programmes.⁴

Ownership and history

The business was founded by Bob Woeppel — whose initials give the company its name — and his wife Jacki. Both hold degrees in music education and both taught as directors before starting the business. After Bob qualified as a certified repair technician, he began repairing instruments for local schools out of the couple’s home under the name R.E.W. Band & Orchestra.¹

The business then moved through a documented sequence of premises, all in Johnson County:¹

In the summer of 2006 the company changed its name from R.E.W. Band & Orchestra to REW Music, and in August 2006 opened its Olathe store.¹

The company’s homepage states the business has been family-owned “from the beginning, back in 1982.”³ Its About page, evidently older copy, says “for over 30 years” in one paragraph and “for almost 30 years” in the next.¹ This page uses 1982, the only specific year any first-party source states; the vaguer figures appear to be un-updated copy rather than a competing claim. Corroborate against Kansas business filings or press before treating 1982 as settled.
