Kansas City’s oldest continuously operating barbecue restaurant. Opened July 4, 1934 by Anthony and Alda Rieke at 600 Southwest Blvd in KCK’s Rosedale neighborhood — four years before Arthur Bryant’s moved to its famous Brooklyn Avenue address. Now in its third generation: daughter Janelle Brown and granddaughter Marisha Smith (with husband Bill) operate the pit today. Over 90 years of continuous family ownership under one roof, one neighborhood, one pit tradition.

Description

Rosedale Bar-B-Q is Kansas City’s oldest continuously operating barbecue restaurant — opened July 4, 1934, by Anthony and Alda Rieke at 600 Southwest Blvd in the Rosedale neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas. Rosedale predates the move of Arthur Bryant’s to its famous 18th & Brooklyn address by four years, placing it at the very foundation of Kansas City’s barbecue tradition.¹²

The restaurant has operated continuously under the Rieke family for more than 90 years, never changing address and never leaving the family’s hands. Founders Anthony and Alda Rieke passed the business to daughter Janelle Brown, who continues to operate the pits today alongside her own daughter Marisha Smith and son-in-law Bill — the third generation of the Rieke line to run the same restaurant in the same building in the same Rosedale neighborhood.¹

Rosedale Bar-B-Q’s survival across nine decades — through the Depression, World War II, the postwar suburban expansion, and the rise of national BBQ chains — is a statement of the neighborhood loyalty and culinary consistency that defines the KC BBQ tradition at its origin.

Ownership and history

Anthony and Alda Rieke opened Rosedale Bar-B-Q on July 4, 1934.¹²³ The Independence Day opening date was not accidental — it planted the restaurant’s identity in the civic fabric of the Rosedale community from day one.

The business passed in-family to Janelle Brown (the Riekes’ daughter), who has operated it through the restaurant’s decades of growth into a recognized KC institution. Janelle’s daughter Marisha Smith and son-in-law Bill Smith now work the restaurant alongside her, making Rosedale Bar-B-Q a three-generation operation with no corporate owner, no franchising, and no second location.¹

Kansas City-style pit barbecue — chopped-beef sandwiches, pork spare ribs, dinners with fries/beans/slaw, and a long fried-side board. Official site and Toast were both reachable 2026-08-12 (the July 13 403 is no longer true). July 13 aggregator prices on this page were badly stale (e.g. chopped sandwich listed $5.15; Toast starts at $8.99) and have been replaced.⁴⁵

Gluten-free bun +$1.00. Lean hand-trimmed brisket or burnt ends add $2.50 on sandwiches that allow it. Dinners served with fries, beans, slaw, and bread (potato salad / mac and cheese / macaroni salad on request; cheesy bake +$0.75; sweet-potato fries or onion rings +$1.00).⁴⁵
