Schutte Lumber Company is a lumberyard, mill, and contractor showroom on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri, founded in 1880 by S. Z. Schutte and operating from the same site ever since. It describes itself as Kansas City’s oldest independent commercial construction supply yard, and it remains privately owned and owner-operated — the founding family’s trust sold the business to Daniel C. Fuhrman in 1997, and Michael D. Fuhrman bought it in 2014 and serves as president. The yard specializes in heavy timbers, cedar, specialty hardwoods, siding and pattern profiles, and custom millwork run on an on-site mill.
Description
Schutte Lumber Company is a lumberyard and mill on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri, at the western edge of the Crossroads. The company presents itself as Kansas City’s oldest independent commercial construction supply yard, running a contractor and DIY showroom, a roughly 13-acre yard, and a specialty-products mill from a single location it has held since 1880.1
Its trade is not general big-box hardware. The yard’s reputation is in heavy timbers, cedar, engineered wood, domestic and specialty hardwoods, siding and pattern profiles, and custom interior and decorative trim mouldings — with an on-site mill that reproduces hard-to-match patterns as well as running stock profiles.12 That capability is the reason restoration contractors and architects use the yard: a mill that can match an existing moulding profile is uncommon in the metro. The company is also listed as a full-line Festool dealer, putting professional tools alongside the lumber.3
The Southwest Boulevard yard is old enough to appear in Kansas City’s documentary record of the interwar decades; the Pendergast Years project places a Schutte Lumber Company operation at 2931 Southwest Boulevard in an aerial photograph from about 1930, immediately adjacent to the present 3001 address.4 The Missouri Valley Special Collections photo archive also holds images of the company.5

History
S. Z. Schutte founded the company in 1880, and the business has operated from the same Southwest Boulevard ground since.1 It stayed in family ownership, latterly through a managed trust, until 1997, when Daniel C. Fuhrman purchased it. On July 1, 2014, Michael D. Fuhrman purchased the business and continues it as president under private ownership.16
The yard’s continuity through Kansas City’s building booms — the pre-war industrial expansion along Southwest Boulevard, the postwar suburban wave, and the current infill of the Crossroads and West Side — is unusual among metro lumberyards, most of which were absorbed by regional chains or closed. Payless Cashways, the KC-headquartered building-materials chain, is gone; Schutte is still cutting mouldings on Southwest Boulevard.4
