Steel’s Used Books is an independent used-and-rare bookstore at 8115 N. Oak Trafficway, Suite C, Kansas City, Missouri — Clay County / the Northland, Missouri, not Kansas — owned by David Steel. The shop moved into that suite in May 2026.
Description
Steel’s occupies Suite C at 8115 N. Oak Trafficway in Kansas City, Missouri — the Northland N Oak corridor, Clay County, north of the river. First-party copy calls it “The only used bookstore north of the river!” and tells visitors the shop is in the back of the building.1 The Kansas City Star (Noelle Alviz-Gransee, 26 June 2026) places the May 2026 move in “a cave underneath Pettersson Pet.”2 Pettersson Pet’s own locations page lists its KC store at the same 8115 N. Oak Trafficway address, Kansas City, MO 64118.3
This is Kansas City, Missouri, ZIP 64118, not Kansas and not a Gladstone city-limits claim on the shop’s own site. Directories still file the previous Oak Trafficway room under Gladstone; that is a prior-address / directory issue, not the current first-party city line.
The shop sells used and hard-to-find books. The official site lists specialties as Western and Eastern philosophy, vintage sci-fi, Christian classics and theology, New Age and occult, history and politics, counterculture, and rare / out-of-print titles.1 The Star adds religion, poetry, architecture, fiction, and more, and quotes Steel: “We’re archivists with things for sale.” It reports tens of thousands of titles; about 70% of inventory under $20; paperbacks typically $5–$10; hardbacks $8–$15; vintage and rare (example given: Roman missals) higher.2 Employee Adriana Stewart, who joined at the move, told the paper the vintage sci-fi section is a draw for people in their 20s, and that pulps and “bodice ripper murder mysteries” are hard to find elsewhere.2
An /inventory/ page on the official site exists and says it is a curated, incomplete list, with prices by phone. The same page, as fetched, still carries builder lorem ipsum blocks. Those blocks are not treated as a live catalog.4
Not this shop: steelbooks.com (Rare Steelbooks, film steelbook discs); Steel Collectibles (Kennesaw, Georgia video-game / comic shop); Steel Vintage Bikes (Berlin); 스틸북스 / Steel Books (Local Stitch bookstores in South Korea); or any other “Steel’s Books” outside this Northland used-book trade name.
Address / building-number conflicts — printed, not merged.
- Current suite: first-party and The Star both use 8115 N. Oak, Suite C.12
- Facebook page Steel’s Vintage Emporium posted 5 May 2026: “book shop new address / 8101 n oak / kc mo 64118 / (in back suite 8115 - c)”.5 8101 and 8115 are different numbers. The post is recorded as a wayfinding note that the shop is in the back of the Pettersson Pet building, not as a replacement for 8115 Suite C.
- Prior Oak Trafficway room: The Star writes 7311 N. Oak Trafficway.2 Biblio’s dealer page (fetched this pass; brick-and-mortar block not updated to 8115) and several directories write 7313 N. Oak / “7313 N. North Oak Trafficway,” sometimes labeled Gladstone, ZIP 64118 or (on Yelp) 64113.6 7311 and 7313 are not collapsed here.
Ownership and history
The Star names David Steel as owner and gives this sequence:2
- 1973 — Parents Bob and Ettie Steel start a Christian bookstore and church-supplies shop in the Iowa Quad Cities.
- 1990 — The business moves to Independence Avenue in Kansas City.
- 1998 — Bob Steel dies. David takes over with his mother. He had already been “heavily involved for decades”: front of house; she paid bills, handled customer service, and ran online sales.
- 1999 — A fire the following year “wiped the inventory”; they “started anew in North Kansas City” and expanded beyond the Christian-store mix.
- North Kansas City tenure, then a first Oak Trafficway room, then the May 2026 move (see tenure conflict below). His mother died after the North Kansas City departure.
FOX4 (Zac Summers, 28 August 2019) and KSHB 41 (Andres Gutierrez, posted 28 August 2019) cover the North Kansas City chapter as it ended: East 18th Avenue (KSHB: near Swift Avenue); new building owner Chuck Cuda of Opes Commercial Real Estate; notice to leave by 30 September 2019; roof / HVAC work that dumped debris in the shop; author Max Jolley ran a GoFundMe. FOX4 quotes Steel, then 57, estimating more than 60,000 used books and calling the shop “a museum, an archive.”78 KSHB also quotes Steel on the 1999 Independence Avenue fire. Those 2019 pieces are eviction / relocation coverage, not a 2019 closure of the firm — the 2026 Star visit is the operating shop on N Oak.
Missouri Secretary of State entity name was not searched this pass. “
Tenure conflict — printed, not merged. The Star’s lead says Steel “had spent the last 20 years to the south at 7311 N. Oak Trafficway.”2 The same article’s body says he remained in North Kansas City for 20 years until that space “was transformed into a shopping center,” then “the store operated at the first spot on Oak Trafficway for 6 1/2 years.”2 FOX4 in August 2019 already attributed 20 years to East 18th Avenue in North Kansas City and 30 years to the Kansas City area (consistent with a 1990 Independence Avenue arrival).7 Twenty years on 18th as of 2019 plus about 6½ years on Oak into May 2026 is compatible with the Star body and with the 2019 TV stories. It is not compatible with the Star lead’s “last 20 years” at 7311 N. Oak. Both Star figures are printed. Neither is picked.
A 2019 documentary The Star titles “Steel the Bookstore” is cited there for “leave the white gloves in the car” and for friends calling the North Kansas City shop “organized Bohemian chaos.”2 A third-party YouTube URL circulating as a Steel’s video (hc_7B4vwoDQ) returned “This video isn’t available anymore” this pass and is not used as a source.
