Suburban Lawn & Garden is an independent, family-owned Kansas City garden-center company that traces to a grade-school lawn-mowing business Bill Stueck started in the early 1950s. It bought the 105th & Roe site in Overland Park in the early 1960s and grew from a 12-acre lot into a multi-store operation: retail garden centers at 105th & Roe, Martin City (135th & Wornall), and K-7 & Prairie Star Parkway in Lenexa, plus two growing facilities that supply roughly 75% of the trees, shrubs, annuals, and bedding plants it sells, and a yard-waste recycling center running since 1989.

Description

Suburban Lawn & Garden is an independent, family-owned garden-center company operating retail nurseries on both sides of the state line, along with growing facilities and a yard-waste recycling operation.1

The company traces its origin to the early 1950s, when founder Bill Stueck began mowing lawns while still in grade school.12 In the early 1960s the business purchased what became its flagship property at 10501 Roe Avenue in Overland Park — then a 12-acre lot — and grew it into a full garden center.1 Today Suburban runs retail stores at 105th & Roe in Overland Park, at 135th & Wornall in the Martin City area of south Kansas City, Missouri, and at K-7 & Prairie Star Parkway in Lenexa; a fourth listed site at 139th & Wyandotte serves the Missouri side.1 The Martin City property covers roughly 40 acres and is large enough that the store keeps a fleet of golf carts for customers moving between growing areas.2

Two company growing facilities supply close to 75% of the trees, shrubs, annuals, and bedding plants sold at the nurseries, which places Suburban among the metro’s grower-retailers rather than pure resellers.1 Since 1989 the company has also run a Yard Waste Recycling Center that processes organic material into compost and mulch — an unusually early date for that kind of operation in the metro.1
