Sweet Z’s Gym is an owner-operated boxing gym in Kansas City, Kansas, run by Zach Brunner, who has been teaching boxing since 1999 — first on the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, then across a series of borrowed and improvised spaces, and since 2009 at a fixed location in KCK. It runs group boxing classes, kids’ classes, open gym, and yoga, and takes beginners alongside experienced fighters.

Description

Sweet Z’s Gym is a boxing gym on South 34th Street in Kansas City, Kansas, owned and coached by Zach Brunner. IN Kansas City Magazine, which profiled the gym in January 2025, describes it as “a deep, rectangular room with a poured concrete floor, some punching bags along the wall, and a little ring in the center,” with Brunner typically working with a student one on one.1

The gym’s student body is mixed by design: experienced boxers refining technique, martial artists from other disciplines working on their standup, and beginners with no background at all. Group classes open with timed three-minute conditioning rounds that mimic the structure of a boxing round, then move to mitt work, with newer boxers frequently paired with veterans.1 Sparring is restricted to advanced students; the gym states plainly on its FAQ that beginners will not be punched in the face and that all equipment is provided.2

Brunner was an art teacher before he began competing in martial arts in the mid-1990s, and coverage attributes his instructional emphasis to that background — telling students in advance exactly when a warmup will exhaust them so the experience is expected rather than demoralizing.1 His stated stance is that all students matter, not only prospects and contenders.1

History

Brunner began teaching boxing in 1999. The first venue was the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art — fitting for a former art teacher — and the practice then moved through inactive construction sites, Loose Park, the corner of a weightlifting gym in the River Market, and an outbuilding at his home before settling into a permanent space. He opened at the current Kansas City, Kansas location in 2009 and has taught boxing full time since.1

In his own account of the early years, the workout was not the point: “Originally, I taught people for the sole purpose of sparring and self-defense. We didn’t have much in the way of equipment, and it hadn’t dawned on me that I was creating a workout, and that people would be drawn to that aspect of boxing as well.”1

The gym’s own site frames the same arc more briefly — established 1999 by owner and trainer Zach Brunner, grown “from being just a healthy way to blow off steam to become a great training resource and workout, for both fighter and novice alike.”3
