The American Restaurant was Kansas City’s landmark fine-dining penthouse restaurant atop Crown Center (200 E 25th St, Suite 400), opened February 1974 as part of Hallmark’s Crown Center development. Warren Platner (with Milton Glaser among creative collaborators) designed the room; restaurant consultants associated with the early project include James Beard, Joseph Baum, and Barbara Kafka. Public restaurant service ended end of 2016; Crown Center reopened the room 2017 as a private event / pop-up concept dining venue under The American brand. Record as closed for regular dining; event use continues. James Beard Foundation Design Icon Award (2018) — third recipient ever per Crown Center copy.123

Description

For four decades The American was Crown Center’s signature white-tablecloth room with panoramic downtown and Crown Center Square views — glass-enclosed penthouse above Hall’s Department Store (KC Studio 2012 description).3 Crown Center’s current page calls it a jewel of the mixed-use Hallmark campus and notes designers Warren Platner and Milton Glaser, consultants James Beard, Joseph Baum, and Barbara Kafka, and early fame for chef Bradley Ogden.1

In 2012 the room’s public dining era still featured James Beard–winning executive chef Debbie Gold, GM/wine director Jamie Jamison, and a wine program then described as 1,100+ labels with multiple sommeliers.3

Ownership and history

Opened 1974 with Crown Center. Feast Magazine (July 5, 2016) reported the decision to close nightly service at year-end 2016 and reopen 2017 as pop-up dining and special events — without then–executive chef Michael Corvino (departing August 2016). Remaining team at announcement included sous chef Andy McCormick, pastry chef Nick Wesemann, restaurant manager Keith Goldman, and wine director Ross Jackson.2 Crown Center’s Mike Paine framed the change as attracting future generations to the campus.2

James Beard Award–winning chefs associated with the kitchen over the years (per Feast) include Debbie Gold, Michael Smith, Celina Tio, and pastry chef Wesemann.2 2018: Design Icon Award from the James Beard Foundation — Crown Center states The American was only the third recipient of that award.1
