The Restaurant at 1900 is a modern American restaurant, bar and private-dining room on the ground floor of the 1900 Building, a restored 1967 modernist office building at 1900 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Mission Woods, Kansas. Assembled by developer Steven Karbank and opened in April 2018, it pairs executive chef Linda Duerr — a James Beard Best Chef: Midwest semifinalist in 2025 — with beverage director Doug Frost, one of a handful of people to hold both the Master of Wine and Master Sommelier titles. The restaurant was a 2023 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality and sits at No. 17 on Kansas City Magazine’s 2025 list of the 30 best restaurants in the city. It serves weekday coffee and lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday; reservations run through Tock.

Description

The restaurant occupies the ground floor of a building that is itself the draw: a 1967 modernist office block whose white “tulip” columns rise in front of plate-glass walls, restored by Karbank Real Estate Company into a LEED Gold mixed-use complex with offices, gallery space and three performance halls.123 The Pitch’s Liz Cook, reviewing the restaurant four months after it opened, called the building “an architectural platypus of tulip columns pasted onto limpid plate-glass windows” and described the dining room’s white marble tables, dusk-blue leather seating, Lester Goldman paintings, flood of natural light, and a glass case of novelty salt-and-pepper shakers.4 Ann Slegman of The Independent found the room “contemporary and comfortable,” gray-toned with “the occasional pop of orange.”5

The kitchen belongs to Linda Duerr, whose cooking the restaurant describes as showing “influences of her native New England, as well as Italian and French cuisines,” on a seasonal menu “frequently updated according to the best ingredients available.”1 The dinner menu dated August 28, 2026 runs from a Maine lobster and leek “pop tart” — a dish that has been on the menu since opening — through pupusas, bitterballen, a curry, sweet-corn risotto, monkfish in curried mussel bisque, skate wing with lobster succotash, rack of lamb and an American wagyu strip steak, with pastas offered in half and full portions and produce credited to the “1900 garden.”64 Weekday lunch is shorter and cheaper — a tempura fried-chicken sandwich, a fried-green-tomato BLT grilled cheese, shrimp tacos on Yoli tortillas, and grilled bread from Ibis Bakery.7 Kansas City Magazine, ranking the restaurant 17th in the city in 2025, credited Duerr with “dishes with edgy, unapologetic and complex flavors” and singled out sake-butter-poached oysters, duck bolognese, fried pheasant waffles, wild boar and a chocolate banana pudding served with potato chips.8

The bar is Doug Frost’s — the beverage menus sign him as “Beverage Boss” — and the wine list is the restaurant’s second identity.9 Frost is one of four people in the world to hold both the Master of Wine and Master Sommelier credentials and is the founder and director of the Jefferson Cup Invitational wine competition; the restaurant promises “adventurous and exciting” selections, including biodynamic producers, with cocktail and spirit-free lists that “change frequently.”1 In 2018 The Pitch noted the list was arranged by intensity — “from softest & lightest to full-bodied” — rather than by grape, and offered in “tastes” and “pours.”4 The August 2026 by-the-glass list runs from a Mosel Riesling and an Austrian Gemischter Satz to a chilled Etna Rosso, with a separate Reserve list and Coravin-poured allocated bottles; the dessert card carries a run of D’Oliveira Madeiras back to 1977, Tokaji Aszú and a Kansas late-harvest Vignoles from Holy-Field.91011 The Infatuation’s Ryan Bernsten called the espresso martini “the best espresso martini in Kansas City” and recommended the bar for “staff that knows your name.”12

General manager Keith Goldman runs the room; the restaurant credits his “great enthusiasm and passion for stellar hospitality” for the 2023 James Beard semifinalist nod for Outstanding Hospitality.113 There is no dress code, and Cook noted “small, graceful touches” such as complimentary savory shortbreads before the meal.4 The restaurant also hosts a “Talking Food” speaker series and “Modern Culinary” events, and its private-events business feeds off the building’s performance and event spaces.1114

Ownership and history

The Restaurant at 1900 is a project of Karbank Real Estate Company, the Kansas City family firm chaired by Steven Karbank. Karbank’s father opened the Barney A. Karbank Realty Company at this location in March 1950; the 1900 Building itself was built in 1967, originally for H.D. Lee Jeans, on a site that had earlier held the Green Parrot restaurant (1920s–1950s).21 Karbank restored and expanded the building — architects RMTA, contractor Jonkman Construction — preserving the tulip columns and travertine walls and adding walnut and oak floors, energy-efficient glass and LEED Gold certification, and inserted three performance halls seating 75, 150 and 300; the 150-seat room is named Rose Hall for Karbank’s mother.2153 A 2016 KC Studio feature reported a “Cafe 1900” planned for early 2017, “elegant and simple in design,” open daily and available for private functions — the germ of the restaurant that opened a year later than planned.2

The restaurant that did open, in April 2018, was assembled by Karbank as what Feast called a “culinary dream team”: Duerr from The River Club, Goldman from Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room, and Frost as beverage director.155 Perspective Architecture + Design handled the 2,800-square-foot restaurant’s architecture, interiors and graphics for Karbank.16 Pastry chef Elizabeth Paradise was on the opening team; by 2026 the dessert menu is signed by Tia Throckmorton.410

Recognition has been steady. KCUR reported the 2023 James Beard semifinalist listing for Outstanding Hospitality, one of seven Kansas City-area nods that year; Kansas City Magazine reported Duerr’s 2025 semifinalist listing for Best Chef: Midwest, and its January 2025 “30 Best Restaurants” ranked the restaurant 17th.13178 The site’s copyright line still reads ”© 2018,” and the menus are re-dated as they change — the dinner menu retrieved for this page is dated 2026-08-28.116

The space

The 1900 Building is marketed by Karbank as a Class A office building with “a gorgeous, modernist entry lobby with marble walls and terrazzo floors,” a roof terrace, fitness room, landscaped courtyard and conference/event spaces, on a stretch of Shawnee Mission Parkway passed by some 35,000 cars a day.3 The building’s own site lists the restaurant alongside its venues and sister office buildings (the 1957 Building and the Barney Building) and runs an events calendar of concerts and talks.14 Mission Woods is a small Johnson County city; The Infatuation files the restaurant under neighboring Westwood.12
