The Rock Shop opened in Olathe in September 2025 because its owner got tired of driving. Ron Fields had been collecting records since childhood and selling them at regional record swaps for years, and he opened the store on the observation that Olathe — a city of 150,000 — had no record store of its own. It sits off 151st and Ridgeview, stocking new and used vinyl from easy listening through death metal, plus turntable cartridges, music prints and shop merchandise.
Description
The Rock Shop is an independent record store in Olathe, opened in September 2025 by Ron Fields.1 It occupies a unit at 1837 S Ridgeview Road, just off the 151st Street and Ridgeview Road intersection, next to Comic Coffeehouse and Enchanted Gifts.1
Fields opened it to fill an absence he had noticed as a customer rather than as a merchant. “I was kind of complaining because there were no record stores down this way,” he told the Johnson County Post. “I thought, ‘If I feel this way, other people must feel this way too.’”1 Olathe is among the largest cities in the metro and had no record shop of its own; the nearest were in Overland Park and Kansas City.
His route into retail was the collector’s route. Fields began building a collection as a child after admiring his father’s, and had spent several years selling records at regional record swaps and shows before taking a storefront.1 The opening inventory was drawn substantially from that accumulated stock.
The floor stock runs new and used, with reissues and shrink-wrapped new releases shelved alongside older material, and the genre range is deliberately wide — the Post lists easy listening, country, classic rock, old-school hip-hop and death metal in the same account.1 Beyond records, the shop carries turntable cartridges, music-themed prints and commercial art, and the usual shop goods: T-shirts, hats and mugs.1
Fields describes the search as the point of the job: “When someone comes in and they’re like, ‘I’m really looking for (a certain record),’ and I have it, it’s awesome.”1

History
Ron Fields opened The Rock Shop in September 2025.1 He had collected records since childhood — the collection began after he admired his father’s — and had built an extensive personal holding, selling at regional record swaps and shows over the preceding several years before committing to a fixed location.1
The founding motivation is documented and unusually specific: Fields identified that the south Johnson County market had no record store, having noticed the gap as a buyer.1 The shop opened into that gap.
No earlier history exists to record — the business is under a year old at the time of drafting. It appears in the Kansas City Magazine guide to metro record stores, which is corroboration of current trading rather than of history.2
