Turner Animal Hospital is a small-animal veterinary practice on South 55th Street in the Turner neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, owned since 2012 by Eric McConkey, DVM and his wife Tara McConkey, CVPM. Dr. McConkey is a 2009 Kansas State graduate who practised in St. Joseph and Independence before the couple bought the hospital to be closer to family; Tara runs it as practice manager. It is a single-location, owner-operated general practice in Wyandotte County — one of the metro’s least-documented commercial geographies — serving Turner, Argentine, Merriam and Shawnee. No corporate parent appears anywhere in its materials.
Description
Turner Animal Hospital is a small-animal general practice at 842 South 55th Street in Kansas City, Kansas. It sits in Turner, the neighborhood in the southern part of Wyandotte County that gives the hospital its name, and it describes its service area as Merriam, Turner, Argentine, Shawnee and the wider Kansas City area — a catchment that straddles the Wyandotte–Johnson county line.1
The practice is owned and run by a married couple. Eric McConkey, DVM is the veterinarian and owner; Tara McConkey, CVPM is the practice manager.2 The “CVPM” is a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager credential, which places the business side of the hospital in trained hands rather than a corporate regional office.
The hospital is a conventional full-service general practice — preventive care, diagnostics, surgery, dental work — rather than a specialty or referral centre.31 Its published hours include a weekday closure from noon to 1:20pm for lunch and staff training, and Saturday hours only on selected dates announced in advance on the contact page.4 It keeps two clinic cats, Captain and Epee.2
Its presence is worth noting on geography alone. Wyandotte County is the thinnest-covered commercial geography in the Registry, and an owner-operated veterinary practice in Turner is precisely the kind of neighborhood business that anchors a place without ever generating press coverage.

History
The hospital predates its current owners; the McConkeys bought an existing practice rather than founding one. Eric McConkey graduated from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009 and spent his first three years in practice in St. Joseph and Independence, Missouri. He and Tara bought Turner Animal Hospital in 2012 — by their own account, so they could be closer to family.2
Neither the founding year of the hospital nor the name of the previous owner is stated on any first-party page, and the Compiler could not source either. A widely-repeated online summary asserts the hospital has operated “since 1990,” but that claim could not be traced to a resolvable first-party or press source in this pass and is not asserted here.
Outside the hospital, Dr. McConkey competes in fencing; the clinic cat named Epee appears to be a nod to it. He and Tara have two sons, Tristan and Duncan, and five cats.2
