Wandering Bud is a women-run ceramic design studio on Troost Avenue that hand-makes pastel, gold-flecked smokeware — pipes, bubblers, bongs and grinders built to sit on a shelf rather than be hidden in a drawer.

Description

Wandering Bud is a ceramic design studio at 4446 Troost Avenue, on the Troost corridor just south of the Plaza, where a small team of artists hand-makes smoking accessories: pipes, bubblers, bongs and grinders.1 The studio’s whole argument is aesthetic. Founder Riley Brain started the line after finding dispensary shelves stocked with what she has described as “bro-ey bongs and unsightly steamrollers,” and designed pieces that read at a glance as objects rather than paraphernalia.12

The house look is distinctive and consistent — bright pearlescent glazes in pastel ranges, sculptural silhouettes, hand-painted detail, and flecks of real 22-karat gold worked into carved surfaces.3 The Pitch described the results as resembling “funky statuettes and décor items that at first glance might not even be realized as fully functional smoking pipes.”3 Named pieces recur across coverage and the shop: the Flora bong, the Nelle steamroller, the Billie bubbler, the Bloom.14

The studio is female-founded and women-driven, with Brain joined by a production manager and a marketing lead.1 Distribution runs nationally through the studio’s own online shop alongside sales in Kansas City.14 The business has also done local collaborations — Startland News covered a joint release with Kansas City designer Whitney Manney in 2023.5

Brain has attached the business to local redistribution as well as local design: The Pitch reported that she allocates a portion of company profits to Kansas City G.I.F.T., which grants funds to Black-owned businesses.2

Ownership and history

Wandering Bud was founded by Riley Brain in 2016.4 It began as a passion project run out of Brain’s basement, started after a trip to Portland where she noticed how little variety was available in smokeware.24 The studio’s own about page frames the same origin: tired of the available options, she started making her own, and built the basement project into a brand.1

By January 2023 the operation had outgrown its Troost studio. Brain told The Pitch the team was “very cramped,” with inventory still being stored offsite and in her basement, and described plans to move into a larger space with a small storefront at the front, hoping to open it “by 4/20 time.”6 The studio’s current listed address is 4446 Troost Ave.1 Whether that address is the post-expansion space or the original one, and whether the customer-facing storefront opened as planned, is “.
