Weston Red Barn Farm is a working family farm in Platte County, about forty minutes northwest of downtown Kansas City, that Steve and Cindy Frey founded in 1990 to give city families a real farm to walk around in. It runs on the seasons — baby animals and pony rides in spring, u-pick flowers through the summer, apples and a pumpkin patch and hayrides in the fall — alongside a country store, school tours, and two wedding barns. A second generation of the family now runs the operation.

Description

Weston Red Barn Farm is a family-owned farm at 16300 Wilkerson Road in Weston, Missouri, in the northwest corner of the Kansas City metro. It was founded on a stated premise that is unusual for a visitor attraction: the farm’s mission, in its own words, is to provide an educational experience for children and a place for families to enjoy an authentic farm setting in a safe, peaceful and noncommercial environment.1 The Freys built the place around a nineteenth-century Missouri farmstead idea rather than an amusement-park one, and that restraint is the defining thing about it.

The farm is seasonal and the calendar governs what a visitor finds. Spring brings baby animals — goats, lambs, foals — and pony rides, plus school tours in April and May. From mid-June until the first frost the u-pick flower fields are open, planted in zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos, and celosia. Apple picking starts on Labor Day weekend. Fall is the farm’s largest season: the pumpkin patch, weekend hayrides, a maze, fall-festival weekends, and a second run of school tours in September and October.2

A country store on the property sells fresh produce and farm-raised beef, and the farm keeps two barns — the Red Barn and the Timber Barn — as wedding and event venues.2 On fall festival weekends the food service is catered by The Rub Bar-B-Que rather than run in-house.2

History

Steve Frey bought the land in 1989, and Weston Red Barn Farm opened for business in 1990.1 By the farm’s account the project came out of Steve Frey’s childhood memories of visiting an uncle’s farm in Missouri, and a wish to recreate the experience of a family farm as something anyone could visit.31 Steve and Cindy Frey founded and built the operation together.3

The farm has now passed its thirty-fifth year. The official account states that a next generation of farm leaders is bringing new ideas while holding to the original mission and values, indicating a generational handover in progress or complete as of 2026.3 The individual members of that second generation are not named in any source located in this pass.
